Heartbreaking reality check from North Carolina:

About 900 people died last year with NO ONE to claim their bodies. Families either couldn’t be found… or straight-up didn’t care. State cremates them, stores the ashes for 3 years, then scatters them at sea in a respectful ceremony — 116 sets this time, miles off the coast.

These are American citizens who slipped through the cracks and remained unclaimed in death.

Video hits different watching the final goodbye at sea. Respect to the Medical Examiner’s office for giving them dignity when no one else would. But damn… how many more are out there nationwide?

Much of this is undoubtedly thanks to family breakdown and government dependency.
