Sadly they do exist, in droves.

This is why the founders built in a level of aristocracy into our governmental structure when The Constitution was ratified.

Our founders were deeply uncomfortable with unchecked democracy. This is why they designed the Senate to be a separate entity altogether. Up until 1913 with the passage of the 17th Amendment, Senators were chosen by the State legislatures so that Congress carried representation from both "the people" and "the states" to ensure that a simple 51% majority couldn't trample the rights of the other 49% as would happen in a pure democracy.

The analogy George Washington used when describing this to Thomas Jefferson was the Cup and Saucer as they had coffee one morning.

The House (the hot cup) was designed to be the immediate voice of the people. This naturally made it more prone to the whims of rapidly evolving public sentiment.

The Senate (the cooling saucer) was designed to be a more aristocratic, deliberative body that ensured they weren't swayed by irresponsible whims of the public. The Senate was designed to serve as an internal check and balance of power within Congress itself.

But we don't have that anymore. 1913 was a year of many changes.

Trump's tariff dream scenario, if it were to happen:

Bring back manufacturing to the US. Lowered dependency on foreign imports will severely impact tariff revenues. At that time, they switch over to a federal sales tax that taxes CONSUMPTION rather than INCOME. This both encourages saving in lower/middle income households while preventing the wealthiest of Americans from avoiding taxation.

It's a win for everyone across the board.
