Round Three. Second time registering as a widow. Own special kind of heartache. But my #cancer ensures I'm in the fast lane to getting back to him.
Here for the broken. Only voter I care about. It's high time the ultra-poors have a voice.

Sitting on the subway on a freezing Tuesday morning, I watched a guy in a giant puffer jacket very carefully peel a tiny orange, separate it into perfect individual slices, and then look around the train car like he was about to make a major announcement. There were only about six of us in there, all looking miserable and exhausted. He cleared his throat, held up a slice, and said, in this incredibly gentle voice, "Does anyone need a little boost of vitamin C?" Nobody said anything for a second. We’re in New York; usually, when someone addresses the car, you prepare for the worst. But then this exhausted-looking woman in business attire raised her hand, and he walked over and gently dropped a slice into her gloved hand. Then a teenager with headphones took one. I took one too. It was cold, sweet, and tasted like a weird, quiet moment of human connection in a dirty metal tube. We all just sat there chewing our orange slices in silence while the train rattled along. Best commute of my life, honestly.
I don’t know how a seven-year-old child is supposed to miss this many people all at once.
Roaa Shehab is seven years old and in the second grade. After years of war and interrupted schooling, she is learning her letters again, learning words, and discovering that the things we carry inside us can somehow be put down on paper.
Roaa is my uncle’s granddaughter.
In a single day, my uncle, most of his children, and most of his grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Roaa’s father was one of them.
Two days ago, she came home from school, took out her notebook and pencils, sat alone in the corner of the room, and started writing.
Her mother asked her: “What are you doing?”
She simply said:
“I’m doing my homework.”
That night, after Roaa had gone to sleep, her mother was going through her schoolbag and found the paper.
It wasn’t homework. Her teacher had never asked her to write it.
It was the first piece Roaa had ever written completely on her own, just as she was learning how to put letters together and turn them into something she wanted to say.
This is exactly what she wrote:
My First Arabic Lesson
Dad, I miss you so much.
Dad, I miss you and my uncles.
Dad ❤️ Soso ❤️ Uncle Ahmad ❤️ Uncle Mohammed ❤️ Joudi ❤️
Aboud ❤️ Israa ❤️ Grandma ❤️ Aunt Khawla ❤️ Joudi ❤️
Osama ❤️ Lina ❤️ Me, Roaa, Mama and Razan love you ❤️
I love you all ❤️ Dad, I love you so much.
And at the end, she drew a heart and wrote inside it:
Dad and Mama.
Ever since I read it, there is one word I can’t get past:
Dad.
Roaa has only just learned how to write it.
But her father is no longer here to see her write his name for the first time.
She is seven years old. She has only just discovered writing, and the first thing she needed it for was to find a way to speak to her dead father.
Even those little hearts between the names hurt me.
It feels as though she is giving her love to them one by one, because she still has all this love for them and nowhere to put it now.
And what could this world possibly give her that could ever make up for losing her father?
Nothing.
Roaa may grow up. She may study, laugh, fall in love, and have an entire life ahead of her. But that seven-year-old girl will always be there too, sitting in the corner of that room, writing:
“Dad, I miss you so much.”
What a filthy world this is.
You took their fathers, their homes, and their childhoods, and left them with paper to write down how much they miss them.
And there are not enough words in all the languages of this world to explain to Roaa why, at seven years old, she had to learn how to write to the dead before she learned how to write about life !!

Trump is sending a clear message by cutting off student loans for “degrees that don’t make enough money”:
Forget about pursuing your dreams or following your passions. The only thing that matters in our society is profit.
They really just want us to spend our entire lives working to make corporations richer, and most Americans go along with it, never demanding anything better.
Greed truly is the root of all evil and why our country will eventually collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.
At the United Nations, more than 40 countries have gathered for The Hague Group High-Level Meeting, co-sponsored by South Africa and Malaysia. They’re calling for a UN arms embargo on Israel and protecting the ICC from a US-led sabotage campaign. @ProgIntl
If you are overwhelmed by all the cruelty and tempted into hopelessness, you are a good person and on the right side of history.
Those in power want nothing more than to steal your hope and drive you into apathy.
Keeping your empathy and hope alive is an act of resistance.
If you’re struggling to put food on the table or buy gas for your car, remember, these insanely affluent assholes have increased their collective wealth by $1.5 trillion dollars under Trump’s “presidency.”
@froglet80 One time, panhandling by a red light at Christmas, I had a sign that said "3 kids counting on me", this woman stopped her car and started pulling stuff out of her bags. I went home with 3 gifts for each child. Plus cash. She kept saying, "I am so upset you have to do this." 😭
This is the last photo of Gazan photojournalists Haitham Abdel-Wahed and Nidal Al-Whaidi at Erez Crossing on Oct 7, 2023.
They were kidnapped by Israeli forces and disappeared so far. No news about them since then.
Their Western colleagues have literally never mentioned them once.
Iran put a rational, transactional 7-day off-ramp on the table to pull the region back from the abyss.
Washington’s response? Rejection. And a reported plan to resume bombing after the midterms.
Let us be absolutely clear about what this means.
The US did not reject this deal because it was "bad deal" or "unfavorable." They rejected it because peace, stability, and open maritime trade do not serve the military-industrial complex. They do not generate the political theater needed for midterms.
We live in a world where the person committing Genocide has center stage at the UN and a 50 vehicle convoy for protection.
While the victim of Genocide was banned from even attending.
We are in a far worse state now than we were 80 years ago.
Wanted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu holds up a pager during his UNGA speech, highlighting one of the most sinister terrorist attacks in modern history. 42 men, women and children killed and over 4,000 injured over the course of two days in the Mossad-orchestrated terror attack in Lebanon.
Netanyahu is proud of it.
We’re living in some dark times. @NYCMayor arrest this fucking guy
🇮🇷🇺🇸 The U.S. delegation walks out as Pezeshkian confronts the UN with images of Iran’s dead children
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held up before-and-after photographs of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab and the sports hall in Lamerd, showing the civilian facilities before and after they were destroyed during U.S. strikes.
The Minab attack killed 168 civilians, including 120 children. A UN fact-finding mission has since found reasonable grounds to believe the U.S. was responsible for unlawful attacks on the school and sports facility.
As Pezeshkian continued his address, the U.S. delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall.
They were willing to bomb it but they weren’t willing to sit in the room and look at the aftermath.
