likely nobody cares but i found a paper reconstructing igbo names from a french slave ship and its so fascinating how little "chi/chukwu" shows up even though "god" is now the root of the majority of igbo names! likely a more modern naming convention than we thought
I may be in the minority, but if you [knowingly] purchase a ticket for an event, and the reduced ticket price is specifically due to needing to be there before a set time, then having to pay extra(or the difference) isn’t a “scam”
The only reason it became a big story is because right wingers wanted to use it to undermine all black people.
And the journalists who piled in knew that was the only reason.
In 2014 we published the first large-scale study of suicidality in autism, subsequently widely replicated, revealing that 1 in 4 autistic people have planned or attempted suicide. That’s why I’m very concerned about the impact of the media coverage on Professor Jason Arday who is autistic. He has been accused of plagiarism and he was cleared of any academic misconduct following a rigorous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University. And yet he continues to be systematically discredited over every detail of his life, daily. We should of course always investigate plagiarism to protect academic standards. However, I cannot stand by and watch when an autistic man is on the ground and the kicking continues. This is relentless bullying of a vulnerable autistic man and raises safe-guarding issues. It’s time to stop.
In the final months of his life, Jason Arday was subject to a relentless onslaught of attacks and abuse.
Jason was a human being with friends and family - but he was turned into a pawn for vicious culture wars by a cruel media industry motivated by racism and clicks.
The lessons are never learned. When will the British media face accountability for its behaviour?
Jason was much loved by those around him. May he rest in peace.
As one of the few black academics in the UK, I can say with certainty that many of us are struggling with our mental health and that this devastating moment might be very triggering for some. Please speak out to someone, dont be alone with your thoughts right now @samaritans
Jason Arday was hounded by the British media to death.

Over plagiarism controversy.
Nathan Cofnas—a sacked Cambridge race-theorist—started the allegations.
As someone who has experienced a smear campaign, I can tell you with full certainty that it can take you into total darkness.
They forget they are dealing with a human being. They forget it is someone's entire life they are tearing apart.
This is what sinister journalism does.
Shame on the British media.
Idk who needs to hear this, but if you have Amazon prime you can get two odeon tickets for £10 Mon-Thursday.

Its annual results revealed it's £18.5bn in debt
Not exaggerating when I say the future depends on this catching on en masse. Kids, adults. Book clubs, silent reading groups. For the past twenty-five years tech has corroded our attention, intelligence and basic pleasure in living, and books are the key to winning them back.
