Excl: Teachers could be allowed to work four-day weeks under government plans to give schools greater flexibility over working hours.
Schools will still have to provide lessons five days a week but Lucy Powell, the education secretary, has asked an independent pay review body to consider how to scrap the requirement for individual full-time teachers to be available for work on 195 days a year.
The reforms could allow teachers to complete their contracted hours over fewer days and ministers are also considering removing the ceiling on teachers’ salaries - both in a bid to help schools attract and retain staff.
A government source stressed that the five-day school week would not change and that the reforms were about bringing the rules for council-maintained schools into line with those for academies.

Needless to say, a lot of planners start off at local authorities and then make the jump.”
