The Center for Growing Justice: 501(c)(3) non-profit defending due process, seeking asylum for immigrants, and providing civil rights litigation and education
We changed our legal name with the State of Missouri to encompass our broader mission. We are still committed to law enforcement accountability, but we are also working on seeking justice in the immigration arena. 1of2

URGENT: Leonard "Raheem" Taylor is scheduled to be executed TONIGHT.
He has maintained his innocence for 20 years and is asking for a chance to have all the evidence in his case fully reviewed before Missouri makes an irreversible mistake. https://t.co/sa4PbXUJ9q
Raheem’s brother maintained–including in testimony under penalty of perjury–that his statement claiming Raheem confessed to him was falsely given after he was threatened, beaten and coerced by the police.
In 5 days, #MO plans to execute Raheem despite his brother’s recantation.
Together w/ @innocence & @PhillipsBlackPr, MIP has asked @GovParsonMO to stay the execution of Leonard Taylor & appoint a Board of Inquiry to investigate Mr. Taylor's innocence. Without a stay, MO is at risk of executing an innocent man. Read our request: https://t.co/E8I2wvFTXR
We are rapidly receiving new expert statements that prove Leonard Taylor was not in Missouri at the time of the crime, & the only evidence they had to arrest him in the first place was a violently coerced statement from his brother that was immediately and repeatedly recanted.

Data like this shows prosecutors oppose bail and sentencing reform not because they are chiefly concerned with improving public safety. They oppose them because their caging and extracting wealth from people is infinitely harder without harsh sentences and pre trial confinement.
Cancelation has little economic effect for governments, since these debts are rarely paid, and lifting the debt would get 11 million people able to drive to work, school, medical visits w/o fear and w/o gov using more $$$ on arrests
Only the U.S. and the Philippines allow the for-profit money bail system for people not convicted of crimes. Do cops, prosecutors, and judges decide who is free and who is caged based on access to money because it makes us safer?

Bills likes this from Rep. Doug Clemens are important
“Without ever having a search warrant for the private premises of a home, they're getting access to private data of the house by going through a third party corporation and nobody gave permission.”

The death penalty is cruel and racist.
Today I stood with @RepCori, @MADPMO, faith leaders, and community members to call for clemency and to reverse the decision by the State to end #ErnestJohnson's life. We must abolish the death penalty in Missouri.
