Please read our statement on MW1b proposal.
We ask again, who is Enfield council building Meridian Water for? Because Phase 1b (just like 1a) does not provide affordable housing for Edmonton residents!
Enfield Council was warned about borrowing vast sums of money to fund #MeridianWater, which has failed to deliver. They ignored the warnings and are now on the brink of bankruptcy, with residents picking up the tab, particularly the most vulnerable.

#MeridianWater if properly delivered could help solve Enfield's housing crisis.
But if the council mess it up, it will be a huge missed opportunity in terms of homes & jobs, and lead to significant cuts to services.
@EnfieldCouncil - please publish the masterplan.

@tomcopley@AngelaRayner@SadiqKhan In Enfield, since 2018, Enfield Labour has demolished more social rent homes than they have built. Actions speak louder than words.
Enfield Council's flagship Meridian Water project had two prominent directors at its helm, Peter George and Simon Gardner. Their recent departures have raised significant concerns about the project's future. @EnfieldDispatch@chakrabortty@4Meridian

UK building group Vistry [Enfield Council's Meridian Water partner] to focus solely on social housing.
"Vistry said streamlining operations would result in some job cuts, while promising investors a £1bn windfall over the next three years"

@GreenGrowthEA @EnfieldCouncil@MeridianWater Maybe you could promote sustainable development by getting Enfield Council to publish the #MeridianWater Masterplan for consultation (as was promised) so local people and businesses can respond and provide input, ideas and solutions?
@4Meridian
Questions about the financial viability of Meridian Water were raised by @4Meridian and others years ago. The council ends up borrowing huge amounts to build unaffordable homes on public land and now cant sell them even as a gentrification project! #Enfield#HousingCrisis
The leadership of Enfield Council were warned about this scenario by the scrutiny committee in 2020, but didn't seem to take their concerns seriously and then got rid of the committee.
This public project has been allowed to proceed for far too long without proper scrutiny.
"The number of properties on Meridian Water is about the same as the number of registered homeless people in the borough. If 100% of those properties were council homes the problem would be solved with one stroke.
Instead, there will be 0% council housing"

It's time to stop referring to Shared Ownership homes as 'affordable' housing.
New Shared Ownership flats at #MeridianWater require annual household incomes of £80k+ in order to be affordable.
Local average household incomes are £25-30k.

Council cuts Meridian Water team from 45 to 20 but is now recruiting a new Director (£106,034 - £129,050 per annum).
Zero mention of proper community engagement in job spec, but they will get 'a fantastic opportunity to make a lasting impact on the community'.
