Multiple rounds of severe storms are likely Wednesday. Tornadoes (some strong), damaging winds, large hail, and flash flooding are possible. Storm timing is 7am to 2pm (mainly north of I-72), second round 3pm to 1am (area-wide). There is a Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5). #ILwx
I can't remember seeing dynamics this in June before... INCREDIBLE shear, or changing winds with height, on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Chicago is calling it "literally off the charts," leading to a "particularly worrisome" tornado threat, especially south of I-80 in central/north central Illinois and into northwest Indiana.
We have unbelievable helicity, or twist, by June standards. Look how much the winds change with height! Any storms will feel those changing winds and rotate profusely.
NWS Chicago calls it "the classic type of set-up long tracked strong-violent tornadoes."
Brian Johnson, a visual effects artist who won an Academy Award for his work on The Empire Strikes Back, has sadly passed away. May the Force be with you, always.
4 years ago today, a monstrous supercell exploded like a nuke over Chicagoland. This storm exceeded 65K feet in height and caused damage to much of the CHI metro, dropping a few weak tornadoes. If shear was better, a tornado disaster may have transpired #ilwx
