Benchmarking group drilling deeper into fixed costs 4 better management decisions. Led by farmers 4 farmers. Quality data & lean management at core #dodifferent
We asked Scottish Agronomy’s Eric Anderson @ScotAgronomyLtd for a personal take on the three most significant behaviour changes needed to achieve the paradigm shift of flushing potyvirus out of the system.

Winter wheat cv RGT Saki which is a soft group 4, full of potential for harvest. Wrote a note to myself that will need to secure some yearling seed to take advantage of the potential of this variety for early drilling in September 2021. Crop will be getting Moddus at T0!
Potatoes 2021 ~ we are off. Ploughing in oil radish CV Bento having completed the task of partial biofumigation by releasing isothiocyanates to reduce PCN & FLN viability, before planting ware potatoes. No GPS or vari width, just years of experience to plough in a straight line.
Skyscraper w wheat receiving 1st N in Angus. 12.5 km per hour forward speed, using Berthoud Trifilet 08 white five output stream jets, operating at 3 bar, with flow rate of 2.77 litres per minute. Watch to the end to see double overlap pattern, achieving accurate application.
GB P infestans population continues to change. New clones putting pressure on late blight management - mistakes may be costly. Clonal dominance. Most inoculum surviving in tubers (seed, volunteers & dumps). @AHDB_Potatoes @Llewelyn68
Bumper haul for Scottish Agronomy members who dominated the spring barley category in the 2020 @adasYEN awards this week. These awards reflect attention to detail, being outward looking, prepared to try new methods & ambitiously trying to get the best out of crops.#soil#IPM
Congratulation to @DuncanTWilson In his first attempt at YEN he wins a bronze award in the category of Best % of Spring Barley potential yield. It is a mind set about the learn, the taking part and selfless sharing of information amongst peers. Every YEN participant is a winner.
October SCoPAFF decision was for non renewal of Mancozeb with a 6+6 month grace period. Anticipated CRD will implement this decision & confirm relevant sale and use periods for UK. Mancozeb used since 1961 but now alternaria & blight anti-resistance strategy will be a challenge.
Potato harvest is finished for us! The hard working trials team have lifted over 550 plots by hand. Trial topics include variety screenings, sustainable PCN control, PCN trap crops, fertiliser and desiccation methods. Some interesting results to present to members in February.
Malting barley growers kicked in the teeth again with frustrated producers unhappy on prices. Interesting article by @C_NancyNicolson in The Courier today with @vaderbogger and @ScotAgronomyLtd popping their heads above the parapet.
⚠️ Slower canopy death from desiccation methods = virus & disease risk to be managed for longer.
🌿 green canopy can remain for up to 3 weeks;
🐞 regrowth is a target for aphids
🥔 foliar & tuber blight needs to be managed
Latest observations read here: https://t.co/B9dPvjhKee
Desiccated potato leaves & regrowth are powerful “super normal stimulus” to aphids spreading PVYn & PLRV. Yellow leaves are more attractive to most aphid species than green leaves. Clear evidence for behavioural response to colours in aphids first provided by Moericke (1950).
Well stated Graham Nichols @NFUtweets Growing seed is challenging enough but even harder when everyone is not on the same page! The chickens will visibly come home to roost in the 2021 ware & processing crops. The last straw is that this is a full cost recovery service from APHA.
Thanks @totophil for taking the time to visit @AHDB_Scot@mathers_of desiccation assessments to learn of the practical messages for the seed industry. Due to COVID-19 there will be no open event this year but we have capture data from the site which we will share with all.
Agronomy studies soil management, crop development, the application of science & technology from the fields of biology & ecology, pest & disease management for effective crop production. Helping farmers face daily challenges. Eric talks about agronomists in BBC R4 Farming Today.
Spraying T3 onto desiccation assessments at Morphie, St Cyrus today. Big differences showing between treatments at day 14. @mathers_of@AHDB_Scot Look out for AHDB desication webinar on Wednesday 19th August next week.
*Pushing Boundaries in IPM*
Previous pest monitoring has indicated positive effects along transects extending out from field boundaries up to 50m, so this is likely to be the maximum distance any natural enemy will travel.
The benefit is by moving existing natural enemies around.
Application, Application, Application. When it comes to potato desiccation key principles are; product choice, 5.4 km per hr, boom stability and height 50cm, 400 litres per Ha water volume, Lechler IDTA 120-04 C with flow 1.84 litres per min at 4 Bar. @mathers_of
Day 7 of Scottish Agronomy @mathers_of@AHDB_Scot@hodge_claire commercially applied potato desiccation treatments 2020 at AHDB SPOT Scotland, Morphie, St Cyrus. Answers on an email please of the predicted best result at harvest between treatments 1-12.
