SSRIs are a flawed class of drugs that likely wouldn't win broad FDA approval today.

They offer only modest benefits over placebo (often clinically insignificant for most patients), with serious harms including increased suicidality (especially in youth and come with a black box warning), persistent sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, and difficult/prolonged withdrawal.

Despite the problems, SSRIs still generate roughly $10–12 billion annually globally (within an $18–22 billion antidepressant market), sustained by massive generic prescription volumes long after patents expired.
