Oh, I agree, I think if our only choice was the $5.5M, we had to let him go.

The thing is, unlike Robertson, Bourque (just like Stanky) was very vocal about his loyalty to Dallas actually stating he would like to spend his entire career here so what did we offer and/or know about as far as what others saw his value at?

Would Bourque have taken another 1 year at $2.5 but we couldn't even keep him at that because we were too busy shuffling shit for Robertson who has never once personally pledged loyalty to wanting to stay like Bourque and Stanky did?

I still remember back to when I was laughing at someone saying Bourque was not worth more than $1.5M and I said it was an insult after he took the 1 year with us and improved and stated that someone else would definitely see his value and it would be $3M or above.

We might not have added anyone other than Kivi but if we have players like Hintz and Seguin (actually thought Sequin was having a really good year until injury last year) healthy and back playing and all the players that were injured at the end of the regular season or recovering from injury like Rantanen, Robertson and Lundkvist at full health, we could certainly do better.

Now the loss of Bourque, I do think that hurts us a bit and I don't think we gave Bunting a fair chance at showing us what he has but at this point with the shuffling to keep Robertson, we do not even have the space to offer Bunting close to what he will end up getting from someone else soon.

Well, my point wasn't about the $ amount as much as someone coming across as being difficult to work with on contract negotiations as this is the second contract in a row we have seen this from Robertson.

The fact that Robertson settled a few days before arbitration for an amount that I think Dallas was likely willing to settle on a while ago, speaks more to what I was referring to.

I am also not in agreement with the suggestion that because no team has ever won the cup with a player making over $10M (is this actually factual?), someone should not get $15M?

Heck, aren't there like 30 players now making at least $10M? Even Harley who I don't think be anywhere near that figure is getting that now.

I think Robertson is worth $15M and I think whoever he lands with next year will likely be paying closer to $17M, I just do not think it will be Dallas as Robertson has made it pretty clear to some of us, he has no actual desire to stay in Dallas and is ready to move on.

Over the past couple of years, some of us have been trying to figure out if perhaps there are some social skill issues at play as he certainly comes off as very 'robotic' (how fitting) as far as things like loyalty ect.

Even his response to his future desire to remain in Dallas in his exit interview last year came across as one foot out the door.

Some of us have been saying for years that people are ignoring all his issues and simply focusing on the fact that he can shoot the puck. Hard to watch game after game but then to see the asinine contract handed to him, yikes.

This is not a billboard saying he wants to stay in Dallas.

We only know that he didn't want to go to Seattle (who does) or another team we were willing to trade to- period.

Tiffin did a detailed article on how much Robertson likely would get in arbitration based on comparable comps placing that number somewhere between $11.5-$12.5M.

Don’t be hoodwinked into thinking that Robertson taking this deal is because he wants to stay in Dallas, him compromising at $12M for the next year is a smart move in his favor.

Sure, Robertson stood a chance of getting a little more through arbitration (nickels on the dollar for him), but he also stood the possibility of possibly getting a little less. That said, his compromise likely had little to do with the dollar amount on the contract.

Given the likely arbitration numbers we have seen based upon rules and eligible comps and the shit Dallas has been willing to go through to keep this guy, Dallas would have shuffled to match the arbitration amount and Robertson knew this.

If I were Robertson and felt trapped and knew I had another year obligation before I was a UFA, I would have settled as well, even if I thought I might be able to a little more through arbitration.

I would have happily given up those nickels on the dollar just to uphold my façade of wanting to stay, and to save face and avoid increased tension with my franchise, teammates and fans for the next season where I was obligated to play.

I think Robertson intends to move on regardless of what Dallas starts putting on the table next year and we will all watch this play out starting in January.

As Robertson specifically pointed out:

"At the end of the day, they had my rights, so I wasn't free to go anywhere this year. The chances of staying in Dallas were high, obviously, because of that"

After being difficult to work with on both of his contracts including missing training camp and pre-season games on the previous one, I can see teammates (and staff and fans) being tired of the Jason Robertson drama, I know I am.

However, I just do not see the team actually verbally sharing that tension/resentment/disappointment with Robertson as they are too professional and classy.

I can't wait to watch another year of Robertson's celly's where he typically turns his back on his teammates, including the person that sent him the incredible pass, so he can raise his arms to the fans for that solo self-praise before recognizing teammates.

To all the players that immediately point to the person that set them up with an incredible pass that give credit where credit is due that share in the celly as a team with the team, thank you for being a true team player and demonstrating such rather than just wearing the facade and having your agency tell everyone you want to be a part of the team.

You are continuing to make my point for me.

If you are willing to give up BIG assets at the trade deadline for a player that will be able to walk at the end of that season that you know EVERY contending team will also want at the end of that season, quite the gamble with no long-term contract like I keep mentioning.

If I were going to give up BIG assets for a player, I would want to somehow wrap him up in that long-term contract I have been mentioning knowing that EVERY team will be after him- some with caps and offers that might exceed anything I could toss his way to keep him.

Are you wanting me to break down the 3-way deal on how Rantanen ended up in Carolina or are you trying to make my point for me referring to Rantanen coming to Dallas from Carolina?

If the latter, not only did Dallas give up Stanky and 4 draft picks but we also gave Rantanen a EIGHT year deal which was my point in mentioning what team would take the risk without that long-term deal like we got with Rantanen.

I didn't ignore your reply, it just does not address mine regarding the question of who would invest BIG assets in a player like Robertson without a long-term commitment.

Your reply mentioned a player the fraction of the value of Robertson worth less assets with what, 11 goals in 60 games at the time of trade where the trading team was also willing to retain half his salary?

Not only this, but Laughton due to his extension, would not become an UFA until more than a year after that trade whereas Robertson, a higher value player, would become an UFA a few months after the trade deadline and might have zero incentive to hang around longer.

Like I said what team is going to give up BIG assets on a player of Robertson's value without a long-term contract that becomes an UFA a few months after the trade deadline that will be heavily sought after by many teams for their roster for the following season.

Now, if your answer would have been a team that Robertson already has a desire to sign a long-term contract to play with that also has the same interest in him and the cap to offer $17M or above where there is a relationship and trust between the two after the trade with confidence he would re-sign, that might be a legit reply.
