SEPTA defunding is going to go down as a cautionary tale against fiscal responsibility. you can count every penny, achieve efficiencies that put your costs an order of magnitude below peer systems, never expand the network and focus only on maintenance, and still get curb-stomped
Today we announced a historic agreement to combine with @UnionPacific to create America’s first transcontinental railroad.
Together we will unleash the strength of our nation’s economy and preserve union jobs. The combined company will aim to be the safest railroad in North America, ensuring every team member goes home safe to their families and advancing Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern’s proven technologies for further safety improvements.
We are excited for what this combination can deliver our stakeholders.

@postoctobrist The most blatantly railroad construction gang I ever worked with was from Iowa and Minnesota. We were working right next to the Mexican border, it was a lot to deal with.
@LinkofSunshine @MadameNova_x It's not just Brightline, the near by CSX main has a pretty high incident rate as well. The way they buried both corridors with very poor road design doomed them.
@MadameNova_x @LinkofSunshine It's extremely common, seen it happen a ton when I worked in the industry. People have zero respect for the risk or patience. Drivers are incredibly entitled, I even had the cops called on me for doing grade crossing remediation work.
penn was designed for long-distance trains to idle on the platform for two hours while they stocked the dining car and loaded baggage, mail, and express freight. commuters were supposed to use exchange place or atlantic terminal or transfer to the H&M tubes at newark
lot to unpack in today's penn station through-running article but this line stood out to me. penn was not just not designed for through-running, it was not designed for commuter trains *at all*, save for some LIRR milk runs
A northbound Acela approaches Baltimore Penn Station through a tangle of rail lines: the CSX north-south East Coast main from left to right on the bridge, the light rail and its North Ave station (and maintenance facility) beyond that, and Baltimore Streetcar Museum on the right.
@PhillyGov Saw this the other day, being from Texas and seeing just how Dem Philly is. I guess just be glad they are wasting their money on the wrong crowd haha
My hatred for Reagan & Carter only gets more powerful when I found out that they were involved in killing bills that would have led to large portions of our Rail network getting electrified. Here's an FRA report from 1980 about which sections would have been electrified first
Rio Grande GP30s #3006 and #3017 climb the stiff grades of the Monarch Branch as they negotiate the hairpin curve crossing U.S. 50 just west of Maysville, Colorado on August 24, 1979. A few years later this line was abandoned. Robert Harmen photo.

In the 1980s, American railroads experimented with a whole range of intermodal technologies/services that were designed to help railroads compete with trucks in short haul or service-sensitive markets. The last of these experiments dies this month:
