main goal of LUMA was to be an open-source community initiative to better decompose NBA player impact.

Unfortunately, it is so easy to get lost in the dopamine of creation.

I've been putting off the hard work of sitting down and communicating what was built transparently and digestibly.

Over the next couple of weeks I will be doing the hard work of sitting down and actually writing proper definitions for the 100 to 200+ metrics that exist on the site and my my laptop

Culminating in the launch of a new site created in the spirit of digestible nba stats

the NBA is a star-driven league, but probably not in the way that you think: the self-created shot AND usage rates are actually much higher the further down you go in terms of comp level.

an average collegiate team makes significantly more shots unassisted, compared to the NBA, with the unassisted proportion going even higher at the mid-major level

if i was to interpret that, i'd say it's likely due to the symbiotic nature of on-court relationship between good offensive players in the NBA, meaning that it's not only the stars that make everyone around them better and create easier (assisted) looks, but also secondary and tertiary offensive players making the lives of their stars easier

also generally there has been a league-wide move away from helioball that's yet to fully trickle down to lower levels of comp

🌍 I've spent the last few weeks building the NBA Academy Games Database.

The database covers every edition of the event from 2017, 2019, and 2022-2026 and includes more than 400 prospects.

I believe this can be a valuable tool for D-I colleges especially and even NBA teams scouting the Games.
