Today that drive has reached 5 million Pakistani women.

Roshaneh Zafar. Lahore. Granddaughter of Malika Pukhraj, the legendary classical singer. Wharton Business School. Yale University. World Bank, Islamabad.

She spent years travelling Pakistan for the World Bank, teaching women hygiene practices.
Every village she entered she saw the same thing.
Women already running businesses. Already hustling. Already fighting.
With no access to capital. No bank. No system behind them.

At Yale she had read about Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank.
She went to Bangladesh to meet him.
Two years under his guidance.
He called her back to Pakistan with a personal loan of $10,000 to start her own institution.

1996. Lahore. Five women. Family funds. That $10,000.
Driving to villages. Building trust before building anything else.
It took six months before anyone would borrow the money.

November 1996. 15 loans. All women.

She named the foundation Kashf.
Urdu for miracle.

5 million women served since then.
200 branches across Pakistan.
99.5% loan repayment rate.
Forbes Top 50 Microfinance Institutions in the world.
First MFI in Pakistan to win the European Microfinance Award for Access to Education.
First pro-women consumption loan in the global microfinance sector introduced in 1999.

Fatima Jinnah Award 2014.
Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.
Prime Minister's Task Force member.
Pakistan Power 100.

The man who gave her the $10,000 to start won the Nobel Peace Prize.

She said: I realised that these women would never have their basic needs met if they were not given the economic opportunity to pull themselves out of poverty.

She built that opportunity.

For 5 million of them.
