Iraq’s Jaafari Personal Status Code threatens women’s and children’s rights: custody can shift from mothers to fathers, fathers have major authority over children, and girls can face marriage at very young ages

Hello, I hope you will speak about the Ja'fari jurisprudence in Iraq as well, just like you spoke about the niqab.
In Iraq, child marriage (9 years old) is allowed, a woman does not have the right to choose her life partner, and a husband is allowed to beat his wife even over a simple disagreement. Even if there is no disagreement and he beats her, the husband is not punished, and even if he continues to beat her, she does not have the right to separate from him without a court ruling.
Additionally, if a man kills one of his female relatives under the pretext of 'clearing honor' (honor killing), the law will not hold him accountable. There are also many other laws that treat women as beings without reason who cannot make their own decisions. These laws are humiliating to women in Iraq.
I ask you to please help women in Iraq as well.
There's a lot of women who suffer because of the jafari personal status law and their kids are taken from their mothers and the girls over 18 are not allowed to travel or do anything without their father consent!

Iraq’s Ja’afari Law threatens women’s and children’s rights, including custody and protection from violence. Iraqi women deserve equal rights and legal protection. Stop the Ja’afari Law!
