These youngins are in basketball leagues/seasons all year around and can’t even do a left hand layup consistently (super undeveloped) !!!! The need for development for the whole player in American basketball is so REAL. The balance is just plain off!!!
The biggest mistake I see is when HS starts a lot of training stops.
I definitely get it because schedules are crazy. But you have a small window that’s closing. If anything you should be training more and being more consistent.
Conditioning makes or breaks players
Great conditioning can take you from good to great
Shoot shots when you’re tired
Handle the ball when you’re tired
Shoot free throws when you’re tired
Play defense when you’re tired
Communicate when you’re tired
Just work! I’ve seen kids behind and within a year they are ahead.
I’ve seen kids who are “ahead” and the next grade up they are behind.
Be overly concerned with getting better and ignore the rest.
@TeachHoopsBBall I got fired for the mom being the team mom. I talked with the dad on the phone about his son playing time. The next day I met with the son in front of the athletic director about playing time. And I still got fired!! This was boys varsity this past 25-26 season.
The game doesn’t care how many moves you have "in your bag". It cares whether you can solve the problem in front of you.
Defender is tight? Create separation.
Defender is back? Shoot.
Help comes? Make the pass.
Teammate has an advantage? Get out of the way and create space.
Basketball is a problem-solving game.

Basketball intelligence post
Some adults just know what they’re doing when it comes to coaching!!
Some adults just know how to make players better when it comes to development for all ages!!
Some adults don’t have a clue for both!!
Purely Basketball
The older you get as a player.. the less opportunities you’re going to have for wide open layups!! You must be able to finish with a defender on your side or have a nice floater game!!
Some of the best players on the floor don't always lead the team in points. They lead in something much more valuable...
Creating advantages.
Breaking down the defense.
Drawing help.
Making the extra pass.
Setting great screens.
Creating hockey assists.
Making winning plays.
Those things rarely show up in the box score, but coaches see them every possession. If you're chasing points, you'll have good games. If you're chasing advantages, you'll help your team win a lot more games.
If you’re doing real skill work 1-2hrs a day, 4-5 days per week for 5-6 years… The odds of you not being an effective basketball player are low..
Yes that’s a lot of work but I’m just saying..
"AAU is ruining basketball."
I hear some version of that every summer. But I don't think it's that simple.
Do some AAU programs deserve criticism? Absolutely!
But if you're judging all of AAU by what you see during the games, you're missing a big part of the picture.
The BEST programs spend plenty of time shooting, doing skill work, teaching team offense and team defense, and, believe it or not... even practicing passing.
They also try to teach accountability. And that's not always easy in an environment where players can switch programs in a weekend.
One criticism of AAU I do agree with is that too many players don't get enough skill reps between games. That's why I have so much respect for the coaches who book extra gyms, reserve fitness centers, or find any available court during long tournament weekends so their players can get shots up, recover, stretch, and continue developing.
Think about it. What happens between the games often matters more than the games themselves.
Is every program doing this? Not at all.
But many coaches ARE investing far more time, energy, and care into developing young people than they'll ever get credit for.
The best AAU programs aren't just trying to win the next game. They're trying to prepare kids for high school or the next level.
If you've seen a coach or AAU program doing it the right way, drop their name in the comments. Let's give the good ones the recognition they deserve! 👏👏👏
Calling sprints “cruel” in basketball misses the point.
Basketball is a running game.
If you choose to play it, you’re choosing to run.
Holding players accountable with running isn’t punishment - it’s part of the sport.
