Regarding the discussion at #LINO23 in Lindau last week. At ETH, we believe that diversity is crucial: Science always gains from different perspectives. We continue to work towards a diverse and inclusive environment, and know that we still have a ways to go. @lindaunobel
When one is born in a 1st world country, receives excellent & largely free education, with great privilege in being well funded throughout a career & may then carry on researching in 3 countries into their 80s, one should be grateful @lindaunobel 1/2 https://t.co/Nx1l7qmyvt
I know we’re all mocking this as drivel spouted off by a privileged old white guy, but I hear the same sentiment from younger male faculty/postdocs a lot (albeit said in a slightly less odious way)
Unironically being in a happy stable relationship has been a great boost to my professional life. I suspect we emphasise too little the role that getting a good partner has in the life of women (for both career and personal reasons)
@PernillaWittung@lindaunobel As someone who watched the video and discussion, I wish he would’ve used his privilege of being part of the panel to spare the young scientist from having to be “courageous” in the first place. Keeping silent is part of the problem.
At the current rate, the world will not see gender parity until 2154, according to the latest @wef Global Gender Gap report. The sector with the worst representation across seniority level? STEM.
We must do better to overcome gender gaps in science. https://t.co/Ys9zrwYowj
"I want to use my position [in EMBO] to inspire young scientists to be resilient in the face of failure, believe in their abilities, and to focus on the things they can make happen...."
We applaud the female junior researcher who - unlike the moderator - found the right words to address the statement. @lindaunobel is now investigating the incident.
We hope @ETH and @Joel_Mesot will clarify that Wüthrich’s statement does not…

The SNSF publishes a literature review presenting measures to strengthen #GenderEquality in #research and #science. The measures aim to increase the share of women, transform the work environment and produce gender-inclusive knowledge. https://t.co/aofwxgeVp6
Today we remember one of the world's greatest scientists: Marie Skłodowska Curie, who died #OTD in 1934.
Curie was the first person to be awarded the #NobelPrize twice and is still the only person to receive the prize in two different scientific fields.
