'We will talk to Ofcom about how to make the obligation of Britishness work.’ - John Whittingdale, Minister for Media and Data
If only we could have a honest, much-needed and very crucial discussion about what 'Britishness' really means for most people living in Britain.
“Whether Raducanu smiles or not is unrelated to how good a tennis player she is. Perhaps people, especially men, could stop asking her to smile – and let her get on with what she does best.”
Brilliant and important piece from @DrPragyaAgarwal
For example, why not join this powerhouse panel: @DrPragyaAgarwal@kirstininnes@floschechter and @carolinerbrtsn talking the highs/lows, hilarity/heartbreak around 25 years of The Vagina Monologues. It’s going to be SUCH a great conversation!
Today, @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres announced @SimaBahous of Jordan as Executive Director of UN Women. She is a champion for women and girls, gender equality and youth empowerment. Join us in wishing her a warm welcome. https://t.co/6dd40d8m1Q
On IWD pls don’t just invite the same voices to speak. Why not get women who are doing community work, who are not as big names on your panels (& pay them)? Surely if we want to see change it’s these voices we need to hear from not just people who have big social media following.
On why the label 'African' for fiction/literature is non-descriptive: Africa is a vast and varied place, not a literary style. 'African' is not a literary genre.

I wish teachers would stop saying ‘boys and girls’ to their classes on zoom (or irl). It is not inclusive. It reinforces a binary gender identity. It reminds a child that they belong to a group to which they need to conform to. It also puts ‘boys’ first & creates status bias.
The pandemic has increased educational inequalities:
1. Lack of access to a device
2. Lack of access to a quiet space
3. Lack of access to broadband/wifi
4. Lack of access to learning resources
This is correlated to family income and social class #socialexclusion#childpoverty
A few initatives have started since I wrote the piece abt #digitaldivide@Independent to fundraise for buying laptops for schools: Commendable but I see issues: 1/ Schools are giving out devices on loan. One family I matched laptops for had to walk for an hr with a small baby to
All this scrutiny of what the poor families are doing with their £20, all the mistrust of what they might use the taxpayers money for. Has anyone asked the Queen what she did with her Sovereign grant that comes from the taxpayers incl. a bailout of £86 mil for 2020-21?
Seen people saying how some of these children on free school meals might grow up to be scientists, doctors etc so deserve better. Even if they don’t, EVERY child deserves proper food. Not because they might grow up to be of value to society but because it’s the right thing to do.
So many lovely messages from families breathing a little sigh of relief. The grey day outside seems a little brighter. Bridging the #DigitalDivide one device at a time. Tiny drops, and ocean and all that. #homeschooling2021
I wrote abt digital divide recently. Elderly people are being sent texts for covid vaccine. Many don’t have resources or skills to access them. My own family members almost missed appts. There has to be another way & going forward we need to make digital inclusion a priority.
🌟COVER REVEAL 🌟know it is a strange old time, but I am cheered up by this & excited to reveal the cover of my next book out June 2021 with @canongate ‘(M)otherhood: On the choices of being a woman’ is a memoir + scientific & historical analysis abt bodies, choices, fertility 👇🏽

Since yesterday morning/afternoon, I have matched 7 parents/families with devices for homeschooling their children. I still have more devices coming in so if you know of someone who is struggling, please ask them to get in touch.
