"Why do prices keep going up?"
I'd be happy to explain why prices keep going up...Inflationary monetary policy.
"Why do we have inflationary monetary policy?"
Well, there are a lot of reasons, but the primary one is that politicians really like to spend money, because it's an easy way to buy votes. The problem is politicians don't make money, so they have to get it through one of 3 primary ways...
1. They can tax...which is how they get most of it, but there is a point where taxation has diminishing returns because taxing someone too much leads to a lack of productivity or avoidance strategies.
2. They can borrow...which is one of their favorites because it allows them to kick the can down the road when it comes to actually paying for things; the problem is that at some point the government's credit isn't very good, and people don't want to voluntarily loan them money anymore.
3. They can print it...which is what we have been doing for a long time now. It's especially damaging because when the government prints a bunch of money to spend, it doesn't immediately cause all the prices to go up, so when the government spends the money, they are getting close to the full value of the dollar at the time that it is spent...it is only after the new paper dollars have started to circulate without a corresponding increase in supply that more dollars are competing over the same amount of goods and services and thus the prices go up, because the value of each dollar has gone down through money printing ie. "inflationary monetary policy."
Eventually the inflation gets so bad that they have to stop printing and spending, but that only decreases inflation; it doesn't end it, so prices don't go down to where they were; they simply stop increasing at the previous rate.
"Well, why don't they fix it?"
Because it would cause the economy to significantly, albeit temporarily, tank, and then whatever party was not in charge would blame the party that was in charge, and the citizens suffering the most from inflationary monetary policy would punish the party that stopped the inflationary monetary policy.
"So what's the answer?"
Well...the American people could start getting a lot more educated and concerned about the dangers of fiat currency combined with an ever-expanding welfare state and economic central planning, or the system can keep going until it reaches a critical mass, collapses, and we go through a lot more pain than would have otherwise been required...
So people are actually going to have a giant conversation about “affordability”
and completely ignore the fact that over the last 20 years we ran the biggest money printing experiment in human history?
Yes, young people should work hard. Also, a burrito shouldn’t cost $20.
Lex Fridman: “Only 4% of slaves in the Atlantic slave trade went to the United States.”
“Slavery was ubiquitous.”
“It existed in virtually every major civilization in human history.”
“Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, the Islamic world, Africa, and the pre-Columbian Americas all practiced slavery.”
“The story of human slavery reaches deep into our history and is geographically much larger than the United States.”

If America does regime change in Iran, it won't be for the first time. We also did it in the 1950s. The CIA hired mobsters, paid protesters, and generously doled out bribes to facilitate a military coupe overthrowing then-prime minister Mohammed Mosaddegh.
Mossadegh was, maybe, a bit pro-Soviet. His replacement, the shah, was secular and pro-American. But the long-term outcome of that coup was disastrous. When Islamic radicals toppled the shah 26 years later, they had an incandescent hatred for America. The negative consequences of 45 years of antagonism with Iran outweigh whatever good we got from the Shah a hundred times over.
And that's how it's been with most of our regime change efforts. Toppling Saddam Hussein gave us a forever war and ISIS and emboldened Iran. Toppling the Taliban gave us a forever war that ended with the Taliban back in power. Toppling Libya gave us slave markets in Tripoli and a vastly worse European migrant crisis.
Regime change wars almost never go the way they're expected to, and can easily make things far worse at tremendous cost. That's exactly why war should only be a last resort, when absolutely necessary.

Imagine being @JoeBiden. Your son makes millions of dollars from foreign entities but does not pay taxes because that would mean disclosing that he is engaged in foreign lobbying. With the millions of dollars and no serious job, he becomes a drug addict and illegally obtains a gun. All he tells them is that he is the son of the US Vice President, and he claims that part of the money will go to the "Big Guy." He promises them access to his dad and top US officials. They hire him without any qualifications and pay him millions of dollars.
Eventually, the information comes out, and the Justice Department has to investigate. The investigation drags on for five years, and eventually, they strike a deal with him to plead guilty to two misdemeanors of tax evasion so that the government would not prosecute him for illegally possessing a gun as a drug addict, a serious crime that has sent tens of thousands of Americans to prison for years.
Imagine being the same father who, as a senator, drafted a draconian anti-drug law that sent tens of thousands of black people and others to prison, confiscated all their belongings, and gave a big speech boasting that the drug addicts should all be taken off the streets. Now that your son is one of them, when you're asked about his case, you say you're proud of him and he has done nothing wrong.
Imagine journalists and commentators like @joenbc justifying it on television, singing your praises when their own child would have been in prison long ago for the same crimes. Imagine the people who believed in the rule of law watching the two-tiered justice system so brazenly displayed.
America is in crisis. May God help us all!
