Mao Zedong died fifty years ago today, on 9 September 1976.

Half a century on, the standard way of dismissing the achievements of Chinese socialism is still to invoke Mao as a monster – a tyrant with tens of millions of deaths to his name.

That story doesn’t get a warm reception in China itself, where people understand the achievements of the Mao period perfectly well. In the 27 years between the founding of the People’s Republic and Mao’s death, life expectancy in China rose by 31 years – more than a year gained for every year of Mao’s leadership. Literacy went from under 20 percent to around 93 percent. The population, static between 400 and 500 million for a century, reached 900 million. Land was irrigated, universal healthcare established, feudalism dismantled, land given to those who worked it, and a path to women’s liberation opened up. After a hundred years of foreign domination, China was unified, sovereign and able to defend itself.

There were unquestionably mistakes and excesses, but these were part not of some megalomaniacal scheming (as Cold War historians would have it) but the unforeseen outcomes of trying to solve genuine and unprecedented problems: how a poor peasant country escapes underdevelopment on its own resources, and how a ruling communist party avoids the ideological decay that eventually destroyed the Soviet Union. The party’s own verdict is that Mao’s errors were “the errors of a great proletarian revolutionary”.

Which is why Deng Xiaoping, himself purged and humiliated during the Cultural Revolution, could still say that without Mao’s leadership the Chinese Revolution would not have triumphed, and that for the party and the people he remains “a very precious treasure”.

Did the Zionists have a role in producing the Compatible Left?

Nice article on the Compatible Left, Socialism 2026, and the Congress for Cultural Freedom.

The deleterious role of Foucault and post-structuralism is a key element of this of course, all part of a wider CIA strategy to defang Marxism.

What we are still missing in this account is the role of Jewish leftists in the century long development of these ideas and in particular how they interacted with the Zionist movement to create the Neocons out of an earlier iteration of the compatible left.

One way into integration of the influence of Zionism here is to look at the Zionist-friendly elements in the CIA, most obviously by inspecting the career of James Jesus Angleton, the only American spook to whom there are two public memorials in the Zionist entity.

But another, and perhaps more important, way is to interrogate the role of the Zionist movement in funding ‘Marxists’ from the Frankfurt School. In 1943, the American Jewish Committee gave the exiled Institute for Social Research a $10,000 grant to study the causes of anti-Semitism. Theodor Adorno and his co-workers used this institutional support to produce the landmark 1950 volume The Authoritarian Personality.

The American Jewish Committee and the separate American Jewish Congress closely collaborated with Nativ, a clandestine Israeli intelligence agency operating under the Israeli Prime Minister's office from the 1950s. It maintained a New York representative who worked covertly alongside and influenced major American Jewish organizations, including both the American Jewish Committee and the American Jewish Congress

Nativ representatives coordinated closely with key leaders from both groups—such as Jerry Goodman of the American Jewish Committee and Phil Baum of the American Jewish Congress—to set up front coalitions like the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ).

Nativ maintained an office inside the New York HQ of the American Jewish Congress. Its cover title was the Jewish Minorities Research Bureau and it was headed by Moshe Decter.

This was the milieu in which ‘Marxist’ and ‘Trotskyist’ Jews were transformed into the compatible left, and had their Zionism strengthened or rekindled. Many of them ended up to the right of the CIA as the Neocons.

To understand the compatible left we also need to understand Zionist infiltration and subversion of the left.

Gloria Steinem’s brand of corporate feminism was always a perfect fit for the Western imperialist project. Bourgeois identity politics that neatly commodified women’s liberation while systematically erasing the only thing that matters to poor women around the globe.

Her CIA ties should be the headline of every obituary because they were the logical extension of a worldview that saw the Global South as a testing ground for social engineering and real blue collar women on the picket line as an embarrassment to her elite friends on the cocktail-party scene.

By reducing patriarchy to a problem of individual advancement and media representation, she provided ideological cover for neoliberal capitalism’s assault on the working class. Her work cheered women into boardrooms, Amazon warehouses, global South sweat shops alike, as long as the real engine of history, the collective power of labour, remained broken the gravy train for the billionaire class could roll on. In death, as in life, her legacy is not sisterhood, but a stern, well-manicured finger wagging in the mirror back at herself for betraying poor working Women across the globe.
