President Isaias Afwerki received, today at Adi Halo, and held extensive discussions with Mr. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and his delegation.

President Isaias underlined that Eritrea's ongoing developmental approaches are broadly focussed, at this juncture, on judicious management of land & water resources, as well as extensive programmes in the sectors of agriculture, infrastructure, energy and other prospective domains.

President Isaias alluded to structural impediments - poverty, corruption, external intervention etc. - which are hampering Africa's potential and capabilities for nurturing meaningful external patnerships. Creating the conducive climate as the first order of business is thus imperative for optimal results, President Isaias stated.

The President emphasized on the importance and indispensability of regional partnerships and coordination for common progress and development of the neighborhood and expressed Eritrea's commitment to work together with the ECA to advance these objectives.

Why is Somaliland's President Provoking Egypt?

I genuinely don’t understand why Musa Bihi Abdi, the President of the breakaway Somaliland region, insists on provoking Egypt and beating the drums of war. He recently told the governments of Turkey and Egypt that their efforts to deploy troops to Somalia and hinder Somaliland’s recognition are ultimately futile. In a clear jab, Musa suggested that Egypt focus on more pressing issues like the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which demands immediate intervention.

In my personal view, these foolish remarks are aimed at domestic consumption within Somaliland, as Musa faces significant opposition while clinging to power. However, Musa must understand that antagonizing Egypt is not in his best interest, and I don’t believe he is foolish enough to think that Egypt intends to occupy Somaliland or has any such plans. Nevertheless, if Musa chooses to proceed with his controversial agreement with Ethiopia to grant them a naval base in the Red Sea, he would be declaring war on Egypt, which will not remain silent in the face of threats to its security and the security of Somalia.
