Yesterday, Southall came together to mark 50 years since the murder of Gurdip Singh Chaggar.

On 4 June 1976, Gurdip Singh Chaggar, an 18-year-old Sikh student, was stabbed to death by a racist gang in the heart of Southall, near the old Dominion Cinema.

His killing became a turning point. Out of the grief and anger came the Southall Youth Movement, as a generation of young Asians stood up and said never again.

Half a century on, his community returned to the same streets to remember him, and everything they built in his name.

Henry Nowak, 18, was stabbed 5 times by Vickrum Singh Digwa (23, British Sikh) in Southampton on 3 Dec 2025 after a scuffle. Nowak was recording Digwa; Digwa grabbed the phone, fight started, Digwa stabbed him (including fatal chest wound) then fled.

Digwa & brother falsely told police Nowak racially abused him ("Paki"), punched him & pulled his turban — court ruled this a complete lie. No evidence Nowak made racist comments. Digwa claimed self-defence; jury rejected it. He got life (min 21 years). Mother convicted for hiding the large dagger.

Police believed the false claim, handcuffed dying Nowak on the ground as he said "I've been stabbed" & "I can't breathe" (officer: "I don't think you have, mate"). He died at scene. Police later apologised.

Motive: spontaneous escalation in fight; Digwa was armed with knives (incl. non-standard large dagger). Not a racial attack by Nowak. Victim's father: "This is not a case about racism. This is a case about murder."

Manusmriti is a charter of inequality that is followed by our society.
This inequality gives birth to society leaders who do not deserve that leadership position.
As a result, whoever thus rises in this society does right things symbolically only, expecting the lower strata of society to follow it.
Immediately thereafter, he returns to his own comforts earned or looted thanks to that inequality.
Any deserving leader would know that doing the right thing has to start from him, not end with him.
