If I took away your job, your relationship, and your achievements… who would be left? I came across this scene from Anger Management today and it got me thinking. Jack Nicholson keeps asking Adam Sandler’s character a simple question: “Who are you?” Not what do you do for a living. Not whether you’re married. Not what your personality is like. Just… who are you? And he struggles to answer. The funny thing is, I think a lot of us would struggle too. For a long time, I introduced myself through the things I did. Musician. Husband. Boyfriend. Trainer. Writer. Those things were all true, but they weren’t really the whole story. The problem comes when life takes one of those things away. A relationship ends. A career changes. A role you’ve carried for years suddenly disappears. Then you’re left staring at a question that used to feel easy. Who am I now? I don’t think most people spend much time thinking about that question until life forces them to. This clip reminded me how important it is to know who you are beyond the titles, roles and labels you’ve collected over the years. Because sooner or later, those things change. And when they do, you’re still left with yourself.
