This green water snake was basking along the banks at 5 Rivers. Note the oval head shape and round pupils. Those characteristics tell us that this is not one of Alabama's venomous species. Snakes play a vital roll in the food web of the delta and we like them all!
We are hiring a Laborer! If you are in the job market, enjoy the outdoors and our state's beautiful natural resources, and like flexibility in your schedule, consider working with us. Full and part-time considered. See the link for nitty-gritties: https://t.co/voGOlAmKN5
It was so exciting to see Swallow-tailed Kites fly over yesterday!!! These birds of winter in the Amazon and return in the spring to raise young. They nest in the very top of the tallest trees in the delta. They eat mostly insects, but this one has snagged a frog!
Identifying feathers is extremely difficult. We bird nerds are frequently examining feathers we find on the ground. This particular feather has some pretty distinctive characteristics. Note the yellow shaft. It's from a bird special to Alabama. Anyone want to guess?
Yesterday a Red-bellied Turtle nest that we've been watching erupted with babies. This Turtle is a federally endangered species so please watch out for them but never remove them or any turtle from the area they are in. If they are in danger nudge them to the nearest safe place.
Spotted just off the 5R Bowles Tree Trail. Fungal growth in a tree, or secretive fairies? We will keep our eyes peeled, just in case! What have you seen on your favorite walking trail lately? #getoutside
We have some really terrific local authors in the Coastal Counties. You have probably walked passed them in the grocery store and never knew it! You can find their books in our Cypress Gift Shop 9-5pm, open 7 days/wk. Military and senior discounts. #booknerd#buylocal

On these beautiful spring-like winter days, it's wonderful to get outside and enjoy the weather. Note that some of the birds that you see are "south for the winter," like this very vocal House Wren. These birds know how great the south is in the wintertime!
The Snowy Egrets, White Ibises, and Pied-billed Grebes are taking advantage of the low-water season by hunting for small fish in the shallows. Ahhh . . . the beauty of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta! We're so fortunate to live and work in a place like this.
New to the idea of making your yard a sanctuary for wildlife? I finally got around to a brief post of basic do's and don'ts to give you thoughts on how to start. A lot of it actually saves you time and money, while improving your own well-being.

Pictured above is our native yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria), which grows in abundance here. The beautiful red berries are toxic to people but feed wildlife such as birds, while the leaves can be turned into tea and even contain caffeine! (2/2)
