Fort had already been arrested once before by federal agents for covering the same protest.

Like Don Lemon, Georgia Fort was arrested for journalism. When the federal government starts arresting reporters simply for documenting events of public concern, it sends a chilling message to every journalist in this country.

The First Amendment does not belong to Donald Trump or his administration. It exists to protect the press, to hold power accountable, and to ensure the public knows what is being done in its name. Arresting journalists for reporting is authoritarian behavior and we must call it out every time it happens.

We live in an upside down world. If there are no real and transparent investigations into the ICE shootings in MN, then we are likely to see even more citizens getting shot. If ICE agents feel they are above the law, they will then act more and more outside of civil society’s norms.

I am totally ok with peaceful protests. I am totally ok with deporting criminal, illegal aliens. This could be done without all the theatre the DHS administration appears captive to. Get rid of the masks and the military garb. Carry, and openly display your badges and ID. Seek to de escalate the situation rather than using excessive force. Deportations have happened in this country many times without the chaos. Do better.
