En el campo de concentración de Nordhausen, un soldado estadounidense llamado Lee Davis encontró a un prisionero tan delgado que no podía levantar la cabeza. El hombre parpadeaba, apenas con vida. Davis se arrodilló, partió un trozo de su ración de chocolate y se lo metió suavemente en la boca.
El hombre rompió a llorar, incapaz de masticar, pero sosteniendo el chocolate como si fuera oro. "No había hablado en semanas", dijo otro soldado, "pero susurró 'gracias', en inglés". El soldado Davis permaneció a su lado toda la noche. El hombre sobrevivió. Durante años, le escribió a Davis, llamándolo "el hombre que devolvió el sabor al mundo".
