Things on the shelf your great-grandmother wouldn't have recognised as food:

- Spreadable "butter" that stays soft in the fridge, because it's mostly oil and wishful thinking.

- Bread that stays springy for a fortnight, because nothing alive will touch it, not even mould.

- Cheese that arrives in individual plastic slices and lists "cheese" as one ingredient among many.

- Milk with the fat skimmed off and sold back at the same price, the cream removed and sold separately at a premium.

- Yoghurt with more sugar than a pudding and a cartoon on the lid promising gut health.

- A drink pressed from oats and rapeseed oil, sold as milk, at three times the price of milk.

- Mince made of peas, dyed pink, engineered to bleed beetroot juice so you can pretend.

- A breakfast aimed at six-year-olds, shaped like a cartoon, fortified to undo the damage of being itself.

- Crisps fried in sunflower oil and dusted in flavours that occur nowhere in nature.

- A "plant-based" sausage with a longer ingredients list than a tin of paint.

- A cereal bar held together with glucose syrup and good intentions.

- A green smoothie that is liquid pudding wearing a yoga mat.

Things she would have called food:

- Meat. Eggs. Butter. Fish. Whole milk.

- Potatoes. Carrots. Onions. A cabbage. Apples. A bag of plums when they were in.

- Bread that went stale in two days, because it was only ever flour, water, and time.

More or less the whole list. Not one item needed a label to explain itself.

She never read the ingredients, because she ate things that didn't have any.

The longer the ingredients list, the further you've wandered from food.

Boomers didn't have fast food. Except fish and chips.

Boomers didn't have ready meals. Except Vesta beef curry. Look it up.

Boomers didn't have colour TVs, front loading washing machines, central heating or holidays abroad.

Boomers didn't have babymoons or baby showers nor did they go on stag or hen weekends.

Boomers didn't go to restaurants. Except on birthdays.

Boomers didn't have new clothes every year, every season. They made do and mended.

But Boomers had a fabulous time in the 1960s to 1980s because people were friendly, respectful, dignified and hardworking. Boomers also had law and order and a judiciary who punished ALL criminals.
Boomers were happy with their lot.

Yes. I'm a Boomer.

Are we about to ban terrorists from standing for public office?

A few weeks ago, the government responded to our petition in writing. Long story, short - they fobbed us off.

NOW the petitions committee which is made up of current serving MP’s have said that the government response wasn’t good enough.

The government is now being forced to give a proper response.

This WILL end up going through parliament.
