The Hidden Story Behind Againstthecureent
How did the Shen family fall, and why did they choose death over submission?
The drama is set in a fictional dynasty, but it echoes real Chinese history—most likely the Ming. In the story, the emperor wants to strip the vassal princes of their power. Since he cannot say this outright, the message has to come through a minister: the Minister of Rites, who is also the heroine’s grandfather.
The Ministry of Rites handled state ceremonies, royal sacrifices, the day-to-day affairs of the imperial clan and its vassal princes, foreign relations, the reception of envoys, national education, and the selection of officials. In English terms, the Minister of Rites was roughly a cross between Britain’s Lord Great Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, and Education Secretary—one of the highest offices in the imperial bureaucracy, demanding both exceptional learning and unimpeachable moral character.
Back to the story: for reasons of his own, the emperor moves to abolish the vassal princes, and they rebel—something the drama leaves unexplained, though it happened in history. The old emperor is deposed, and a vassal prince takes the throne. The new emperor—once that very vassal prince—orders the heroine’s grandfather to denounce the deposed emperor for misgovernment: for illegitimately seizing the throne, misgoverning the realm, and persecuting his own kinsmen. The grandfather refuses. His whole family is executed. The male lead’s family, by contrast, denounces the former emperor and survives. In essence, it is a political purge.
