Access to Potable Water in Gash Barka Region
As part of the strong efforts being carried out to ensure potable water supply to remote areas, access to potable water in the Gash Barka Region has reached 73%. The report was made by Eng. Zerabruk Tekle, head of water resources in the region.
Eng. Zerabruk said that, as a result of the substantial investment made over the past 10 years, potable water projects have been put in place across the region, enabling residents to access potable water in nearby areas.
According to Eng. Zerabruk, as a result of efforts exerted to improve the quality and standard of the potable water distribution system, the number of water sources operating with hand pumps, which was 315 in 2011, has declined to 187 with the introduction of solar systems and motors. He said this is part of the effort to improve the water supply system.
Eng. Zerabruk went on to say that out of the 946 villages in the region, 78% have become beneficiaries of potable water supply, and efforts are being exerted to put in place potable water supply projects in the remaining villages.

Independence Anniversary Celebration in Geneva
The 35th Independence Day anniversary was celebrated at the premises of the Human Rights Commission in Geneva on 27 May under the theme âOur Resilience: Our Guarantee.â

Mr. Habtom Zeray, Charge dâAffaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Switzerland and Eritreaâs Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and other international organizations, said that the Eritrean people realized their independence through a long and arduous struggle after being denied their right to self-determination and independence. He also said that the journey the Eritrean people have started to ensure economic freedom and social justice is registering encouraging results.
Mr. Habtom reiterated that the investment made over the past years of independence in water and soil conservation, education, health, and other sectors has created a substantial foundation for realizing the intended future goals.
At the event, an exhibition was displayed reflecting the unity in diversity of the Eritrean people, #Eritreaâs natural resources, as well as its diplomatic activities.
Progress of National Animal and Plant Health Laboratory
The National Animal and Plant Health Laboratory (NAPHL) of the Ministry of Agriculture has registered remarkable achievements over the past 35 years of independence in laboratory diagnosis, animal vaccine production, and the strengthening of laboratory infrastructure. The report was made by the Public Relations Division of the Ministry of Agriculture.
According to the report, before independence, the National Laboratory operated with very limited sections, focusing only on diagnosing a few animal diseases. At that time, the report indicated, no more than 600 samples were analyzed annually. Currently, however, the laboratory diagnoses up to 16,000 samples per year, while its operational capacity has reached more than 12,000 samples per month.
The report further stated that the laboratoryâs main responsibilities currently include the diagnosis of animal diseases, the diagnosis of plant diseases and pests, animal feed and food safety and quality testing, the production of animal vaccines, and the establishment and strengthening of regional animal and plant health laboratories.
Since 2023, the National Animal and Plant Health Laboratory has produced more than 3 million doses of vaccines, including Newcastle disease vaccine, Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro) vaccine, and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccine. In addition, relying on its internal capacity and following the required procedures and standards, the laboratory has succeeded in producing vaccine seeds for Gumboro and Infectious Bronchitis vaccines and conducts quality control testing for some imported vaccines. It is also currently preparing vaccine seed for Infectious Laryngotracheitis, and continuous trials are underway to produce other priority vaccines.
At present, the National Animal and Plant Health Laboratory employs a total workforce of 183 staff members, of whom 58 percent are women, and possesses relatively adequate infrastructural facilities.
The National Animal and Plant Health Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture was established in 1903 during the Italian colonial period and is recognized as one of the oldest laboratories in Africa. Until 1973, the laboratory provided relatively effective laboratory services. However, from 1974 until Eritreaâs independence, much of its infrastructure and equipment was destroyed, and the laboratory operated with very limited capacity and services. #Eritrea

Keynote Address by President Isaias Afwerki on the Occasion of 35th Independence Anniversary
Asmara, 24 May 2026
*"...The establishment of a new global order founded upon fairness and justice must be regarded as one of humanityâs foremost missions and should not be relegated to the side-lines".
*"...Last year, I addressed issues in what we call our neighbourhood; specifically, the Nile Basin, the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, and the Gulf, with particular reference to Ethiopia and the Sudan. Because the global vulnerability of the region has worsened, following the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the importance of collective security mechanism based on an agreement and cooperation among the States in the neighbourhood â rather than the normalized interventionist policies of self-proclaimed regional powers and external actors â that we have been advocating for long has, once again, become abundantly clear. It is high-time that serious efforts are exerted towards this end".
*"...As it will be recalled, I had elaborated, during last yearâs Independence Day celebrations, on our development programmes and priorities across various sectors. While the concept itself is not new, the short-term objective remains improving our peopleâs livelihood, with priority to marginalized and underserved regions. The broader and long-term development programme consists of extricating the country from subsistence economy. It encompasses strengthening productivity, ensuring sustainable growth in production, laying the foundations for advanced processing and value-added industrial manufacturing, and service sectors. Beyond the economic dimension, these priorities also extend to encompass the diplomatic and informational domains".
*"...Road and transportation projects will be expanded according to plan. Extensive housing programmes will also proceed in parallel.  Implementation of projects aimed at expanding electricity and water services will start within this year in spite of potential delays in supply chains. In the sphere of social services, particular emphasis will be placed on education, beginning from the pre-school level with broad popular participation. Likewise, the expansion of quality healthcare services will be pursued vigorously".
*"...Kudos to the dedicated, hardworking, courageous, patient, and steadfast people of Eritrea, along with the ever-present Defense Forces; the kernel, strong shield, and cornerstone of our development programs.  Even if obstacles are encountered, there is no cause for apprehension. Rest assured!"

#EidMubarak - Eid Al Adha celebrations held at Bahti Meskerem this morning in the presence of senior Government and PFDJ officials, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and the faithful.
Prayers and blessings presided by Eritrea's Mufti, Sheikh Salem Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar.
In the religious sermon that he delivered, Sheikh Salem paid homage to Eritrea's Martyrs and underlined that those who cherish peace are those who know full well, and have suffered, the agonies and devastation inculcated by war. The Mufti also conveyed his congratulations to the Eritrean people and its Defense Forces.
Messages of Congratulations
The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, Dr. Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, and President Daniel Ortega Saavedra of the Republic of Nicaragua have sent messages of congratulations to the people and Government of Eritrea on the occasion of the 35th Independence Day anniversary.
In their messages, sent on behalf of their respective countries and themselves, the leaders conveyed their best wishes for good health to President Isaias Afwerki, as well as peace and prosperity to the Eritrean people. They also expressed their countriesâ readiness to enhance mutual relations with Eritrea.
President Daniel Ortega said that this day holds profound historical significance for the courage, resilience, and steadfast determination of the Eritrean people. He also reiterated his countryâs willingness to continue strengthening the historical bonds of solidarity, friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect that unite the two peoples and Governments.
Do you know Eritrea has two native animals who âcame backâ from extinction.
1/ The Eritrean Gazelle (Eudorcastilonura) or Heuglinâs Gazelle: This rare gazelle was listed as extinct until a conservationist came across a small herd of them 90 years later. Biologists confirmed they were Eritrean gazelles. The Eritrean government has set aside land to conserve these rare, beautiful gazelles.
2/ Eritrea side-neck turtle (Pelomedusa gehafie): Like the Eritrean gazelle, this turtle was declared extinct. Scientists had not seen one for almost 100 years. In 2016, conservationists discovered a small population of the turtles.
