I believe demons walk amongst us.

And before somebody starts typing a psychiatric diagnosis from behind a keyboard, understand exactly what I’m saying.

Mental illness is real. Brain pathology is real. Psychiatric disorders are real.

But Christians also believe EVIL is real.

We believe Satan is real. We believe demons are real. We believe spiritual warfare is real. Jesus Christ Himself confronted demons repeatedly. Yet somehow modern Christians can confess all of that on Sunday and become embarrassed to mention it on Monday.

A man allegedly attacks two complete strangers outside a grocery store and then appears to casually SKIP away afterward.

That skipping is what stopped me.

I cannot diagnose this man from a video, and neither can anyone else. I cannot tell you what was occurring neurologically or psychiatrically inside his brain.

But I can tell you what the behavior makes me think about as a Christian.

Ephesians 6:12:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

There are things Christianity recognizes that cannot be reduced to neurotransmitters, diagnostic codes and clinical terminology.

Sometimes evil should be discussed as evil.

Sometimes wickedness should be called wickedness.

And sometimes, when I look at what human beings are capable of doing to one another, I remember something this increasingly secular culture finds terribly inconvenient:

The Bible warned us about demons a very long time ago.

Maybe Christians should stop being afraid to talk about them.
