🚨I’ve written to urge @Apple to drop the age/ID check demand on the new iOS, which just child-locked tens of millions of phones in the UK.
It’s extraordinary censorship, an invasion of privacy + chokehold on access to information.

At least under the US Constitution, widespread age verification at the OS level is highly likely to be unconstitutional. There's still time before California's law goes into effect! Let's strongly point out that such legislation is unconstitutional and work to ensure that organizations like NetCoice are favorable in any way possible!
Your words online are still protected by the First Amendment, and your anonymity by the Fourth. Technology doesn’t erase our rights. No digital ID. No surrender of liberty.
I'm gonna need y'all to wake the fuck up before we can't install an OS or go on the Internet without having to show government ID.
Those politicians don't give a shit about your kids, but they're a good pretext to push more mass surveillance, in the form of social media bans
Begging people to stop falling for moral panic “social media addiction” slop that is being used to further Meta’s billion dollar lobbying efforts and enact the Heritage Foundation’s tech policy slate.
Welcome back to another game of "Digital ID Legislation Whack-A-Mole"
🚨Arizona coming in hot once again this session with a sneaky striker to HB 2991 - and this is probably the most expansive state-level Digital ID bill in 2026.
The striker completely guts the original text of HB 2991, which was a much narrower social media bill that passed the House in February.
⚠️SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM definition is very broad - and pulls in infinite scrolling, push notifications, auto-play video, live streaming 🧵
This is extremely deceptive messaging. The App Store Accountability Act does not protect children...at all!!
This is a de facto Digital ID, forcing every Kansas family (any user) into a government mandate framework that forces every user to upload sensitive age verification data to none other than...Big Tech.
This bill is funded by Meta - the very Big Tech company she mentions in the NM and CA lawsuits. And why is it funded by Meta? Because it gets them off the hook - if this bill is passed, they don't have to change anything on their platforms. All the in-app dangers are still there.
Parents already have the tools from Apple and Google to control what apps their children can download, how long and when they can use them, the content they can see, the purchases they can make. True parental empowerment is encouraging parents to step up and DO THEIR JOB!!!
This bill needs to stay dead!! 1/2
Remember how, in the late 1940s into the 1950s, comics were considered to be addictive to children and harmful to their mental development? Imagine if the publishers/distributors had faced successful multi-million-dollar consumer protection lawsuits based on those arguments.
Online safetyism is the logical outcome of allowing the average person online. Digital ID will be framed as Civil Rights to protect da wimmin & chilren.
Idiot-proof computers -> mass adoption -> web becomes part of daily life. Now using it without Hurt Feelings is a "right."
Outside the LA courthouse parents who say social media addiction killed their children outline the policies they want to come as a result of this legal win:
- Senate version of KOSA w/ strong duty of care
- Reform/repeal Section 230
- Age verification laws
senators and pro-KOSA organizations are lying to the parents of kids who killed themselves and telling them these policies would've prevented their children's death. its a blatant, nasty lie. unfortunately, there are barely an journalists who want to point that out.
this is insanely bad, btw. yes facebook and google should be broken up and regulated but this entire trial is going to pave the way for age verification and gutting Section 230, which is the reason social media even exists. it will lead to censorship of non-harmful content
I would hope this gets overturned by an appeals court, (if it can even go to one). The idea that the social media company is to blame and not your parents is insane, and complete communist nonsense.
“Mommy did we always need biometrics to go online?”
No, some chick’s shitty parents didn’t keep her off the internet as a child and she didn’t learn how to knit and have an Etsy shop or some shit and they sued and well here we are.
