Intelligence officials say Iran has gained leverage over a critical trade route and could use regional energy infrastructure as a pressure tool.

According to Reuters, citing a number of people familiar with the matter, the U.S. has been using tactics, generally associated with Iran and other âsanctions dodgingâ state/non-state actors, to safely escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. One such tactic being used in the wider escort framework is ship-to-ship oil transfers in predetermined locations off the coasts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, close to the areas demarcated by Iranâs newly formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). Per the report, the U.S.-led mission involves the staggered departure of tankers from the aforementioned predetermined locations to meet with waiting Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) outside of the PGSAâs claimed jurisdiction, transferring their payloads, and then returning back through the strait.
