🇦🇺🇱🇷 Jerry Sowood, a 27-year-old Liberian man, punched a 10-year-old Australian boy in the head while he was traveling to Melbourne for brain-cancer treatment. When the boy’s mother, Cherie, 46, intervened, Sowood put her in a headlock and repeatedly stabbed her with scissors in front of her three children, aged 10, 11 and 16. The incident took place near Victoria Police headquarters.

Three bystanders jumped on the attacker, pulled him away and held him until police arrived. Victoria Police called their intervention “heroic” and said the attack could have been much worse without them.

In court, Sowood said: “I punched the kid in the head… I took the scissors and I stabbed the woman in the head.” He then argued that he had “kept his humanity” because both victims were still alive.

Cherie suffered a fractured leg and neck-ligament damage. Doctors are examining whether the attack caused additional inflammation around her son’s brain tumor.

N’arrêtez jamais de parler des femmes afghanes ; ce qu’elles vivent peut aussi arriver en Europe. Moi, je l’ai vécu en Belgique. Beaucoup pensent que cette situation est propre à l’Afghanistan et aux talibans, mais mon témoignage montre le contraire : je suis née en Belgique et j’y ai vécu la même réalité.

Mes parents n’ont pas toujours été ainsi. Avant, ils étaient parfaits. Mon père avait grandi dans une maison musulmane, mais il n’était pas pratiquant. Puis il est devenu profondément religieux et mes parents ont changé. C’est comme si nous avions vécu dans une immense pièce remplie de belles lumières qui se sont soudainement éteintes, nous laissant dans l’obscurité à mesure que les restrictions s’installaient. Mes parents n’étaient pas violents avant, ils le sont devenus lorsque notre vie familiale s’est transformée avec cette pratique religieuse de plus en plus stricte.

La peur régnait dans la maison. Je n’avais pas seulement peur de mon père : ma mère aussi était devenue tyrannique. Je devais porter des vêtements longs et un voile cachant mes cheveux et ma poitrine. Je ne pouvais pas sortir librement et, normalement, je ne pouvais pas sortir sans mes frères. J’avais aussi commencé très jeune l’apprentissage religieux et de l’arabe : cette réalité faisait partie de mon enfance et de mon éducation.

À 14 ans, ma sœur a fugué pour échapper à cette maison. Après sa fugue, ma mère a un peu desserré la ceinture. Quand mon père travaillait, elle nous accordait exceptionnellement quelques heures de sortie, de 13 h à 17 h. Moi, j’utilisais ce temps pour aller lire à la bibliothèque, parce que les études représentaient pour moi la liberté : lire, apprendre et comprendre, c’était entrevoir une autre vie que celle qu’on m’imposait.

Même pendant ces quelques heures, la peur ne me quittait jamais. Quand 17 h approchait et que j’étais trop loin, je courais comme si ma vie en dépendait. Cela a fait de moi une très bonne coureuse, parce que la peur que mon père rentre avant moi, c’était comme mourir. Et même en pleine canicule, je sortais avec un gros anorak et un capuchon pour ne pas être reconnue par les gens du quartier.

À 17 ans, mes parents ont arrêté mes études et je suis tombée à 37 kilos. J’avais des rêves, des projets, une vie devant moi ; puis, d’un coup, c’est comme si une prison à perpétuité s’était refermée. Ils ne m’avaient pas seulement retiré l’école, ils m’avaient retiré ce qui représentait ma liberté.

Plus tard, quand j’ai voulu reprendre mes études, j’ai failli être jetée par la fenêtre : tout mon buste était hors du balcon.

Quand j’étais malade, on ne m’amenait à l’hôpital qu’à la dernière minute, lorsque la situation devenait critique. Ce n’était pas seulement lié aux restrictions sur les sorties, mais aussi à la retenue à l’idée qu’une femme puisse être touchée, examinée ou soignée par des hommes. Je dépendais de ma famille pour pouvoir sortir et ma mère ne gérait pas les finances. Sur la majorité de ce que faisait mon père, elle était d’accord.

Quand on avait nos règles, on était considérées comme des femmes impures. Des filles ont été battues pour cela. De ma génération, je ne suis pas la seule femme à avoir vécu ça.

Tout cela s’est passé en Belgique, en Europe, sur le sol européen : c’est l’Islam, ce ne sont pas les talibans. Ne pas pouvoir travailler, étudier, sortir librement ou accéder normalement aux soins peut aussi arriver dans vos pays. Moi, je l’ai vécu ici.

Voilà la vie d’une femme musulmane quand elle vit vraiment dans l’Islam, et pas un islam où on prend ce qu’on veut et on jette ce qu’on ne veut pas.

N’arrêtez jamais de parler des femmes afghanes. J’écoute cette chanson en boucle, pas par simple soutien, mais parce que je sais ce qu’elles ressentent. J’ai vécu la même chose. Dans mon histoire, je ne me sens pas différente d’une femme afghane.

Et encore, je ne vous raconte qu’une partie de l’iceberg de mon histoire.

A man from Pakistan running a halal shop across from the mosque tells me they voted for Mamdani only because he's a muslim and that they "of course" want the call to prayer at 5 in the morning.

Some locals have already marked this area as a no go zone and they tell me that.
