A rare object is on display at Fort Ticonderoga commemorating the Bennington Battle Anniversary and a heroic veteran.

A musket carried by New Hampshire militiaman Simeon Hix in the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777, is currently on display at Fort Ticonderoga, on generous loan from Brigadier General Richard Valente (retired) of Warren, Rhode Island and Putnam, New York. The Fort Ticonderoga Museum is proud to display this physical connection Battle of Bennington, a turning point in the campaign, and the story of one common American soldier that helped achieve that victory.

The Revolutionary War’s “Turning Point Trail” should rightfully be elevated to the recognition enjoyed by Boston’s “Freedom Trail” given the consequential role the “Turning Point Trail” played in saving the American War for Independence in 1777. While the fight for liberty famously began with the “shot heard round the world” in Massachusetts in 1775 and the long conflict all but ended by General Washington and America’s courageous French allies with the resounding victory at Yorktown in 1781, it was the incredible courage and sacrifice that occurred in the Adirondack Mountains, Champlain, Hudson, and Mohawk Valleys in the summer and early autumn of 1777 - fierce fighting at Fort Ticonderoga, Hubbardton, Fort Stanwix, Oriskany, Bennington, and Saratoga (as well as the heroic effort to defend Forts Clinton and Montgomery in the Hudson Highlands and the city of Kingston) - that enabled Benjamin Franklin to forge a comprehensive alliance between France and the United States. The complete victories at Bennington and Saratoga - during one of the darkest hours of the war when America desperately needed a miracle - providentially gave birth to the Franco-American alliance and notably, the observance of the first national American thanksgiving on December 18, 1777. Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga (which astonishingly marked the first time a British army was forced to surrender on the field of battle) was indeed “the surrender heard round the world”. A colonial conflict soon became a world war - following the triumph at Saratoga - a development that changed the course of the Revolutionary War, and ultimately, world history).

Four beautiful monuments located in Castleton, VT (Battle of Hubbardton); Oriskany, NY (Battle of Oriskany and Siege of Fort Stanwix); Bennington, VT (Battle of Bennington); and Schuylerville, NY (Battles of Saratoga) - were built to honor our nation’s earliest patriots who heroically answered a dire call to arms in the summer and early autumn of 1777 to help save the imperiled American Revolution in the Adirondack Mountains, Champlain, Hudson, and Mohawk Valleys (which now comprise America’s “Turning Point Trail”) when all appeared to be lost during one of the darkest hours of the Revolutionary War.

Today, we must seek to be worthy of the immense courage, faith, grit, loyalty, and love that was needed to achieve America’s independence. These heroic patriots did their part when it mattered most and their new nation desperately needed a miracle. Now, let’s do OUR PART to bring their story to the widest possible audience.
