#ResponsibleSocialMediaUse | All police officials are reminded of the provisions of SAPS National Instruction 5 of 2017, which clearly stipulate that no member may engage with the media or make public statements without prior authorisation from the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service or the Head of Corporate Communication and Liaison.
• This prohibition extends to all forms of communication, including interviews, comments, and posts on social media platforms—particularly where members are identifiable as SAPS officials or appear in uniform.
• Unauthorised communication, whether direct or indirect, constitutes a serious breach of organisational discipline and may compromise ongoing operations, investigations, and the integrity of the Service.
• Members are therefore instructed to refrain from sharing any information related to SAPS activities, operations, or internal matters on any public platform without approval.
• Members are also cautioned against recording or sharing TikTok and other social media videos in uniform that may bring the Service into disrepute or undermine public confidence.
Compliance is not optional. Any deviation from this Instruction will result in consequence management in line with SAPS disciplinary processes.
• The reputation of SAPS and the trust placed in the organisation by the public depend on consistent, accurate, and controlled communication. All members have a responsibility to protect and uphold the image and credibility of the Service at all times.
