Danylo Myhal, born in 1955 in Canada to Ukrainian immigrants, worked as a journalist for radio, the Thunder Bay newspaper, and Ontario television.

The USSR team consisted mostly of Ukrainians from Dynamo Kyiv. Danylo, wearing an embroidered shirt, ran onto the field with the flag of Ukraine and the words "Freedom to Ukraine!" and danced hopak.

"It seemed to me that my act would not remain in the shadows and the world would pay attention to the fact that Ukraine could be an independent state," he later recalled.
