The Cameron Highlands District Council (CHDC) demolished an illegal Santorini-inspired tourist attraction yesterday because it did not get approval from the authorities.

According to a post on its Facebook page, the CHDC said the enforcement action carried out against Cameron Santorini was done in accordance with Section 70 (1) Construction without Approval under Act 133 of the Roads, Drains and Buildings Act 1974.

The council confirmed that its president Azmil Hadid Maznan led the operation from 9am to 11.30am.

It is almost ten years now that Irene Fernandez has passed on. Someone I admired so much for her courage and tenacity in uncovering and exposing the cruelty inflicted on migrant workers over so many years

She was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for what the authorities described as making false reports and claims on the plight of the foreign workers. Fortunately, she was acquitted at the end of the saga

A few months before she died, I bumped into her at Publika. She asked how I was doing and told me to care for my health. An Iron Lady with a heart

PKR is a party of struggle; at least, that's what it was in the early years. Now it's in the government. They should recognise and remember leaders like Irene Fernandez. Her contribution towards making us a better country is undeniable. Do something
