Notice how Belloq dies? Whilst the rest melt, explode and get struck by lightning he is engulfed in flames, eyes wide open.
Belloq and his love of the world is not of God - thus he sees that the wages of his greed, lust and pride is to be consumed by the fires of Hell.
@storyandplot 2/
Indy gives the Ark reverence. His humility defers him to God. Belloq's arrogance does not.
'Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him' - John 2:15-17
Result: Indy is saved, Belloq dies.
@storyandplot 1/
Belloq and Indy are mirror images.
Indy is driven by a reverence for artefacts, their cultures and WHAT they are. He is selfless and believes beyond himself.
Belloq is driven by greed and ego. Treasures are mere baubles. He is selfish and believes in himself.
Thus......
@Jamie_Nash If it wasn't for 1941 getting in the way Spielberg would win hands down for Jaws, CE3K and Raiders.
Instead I'll go for Spielberg: Raiders, ET, Poltergeist. Officially, Hooper directed Polty but I'll never be convinced.
