Pro-Kremlin propagandists like Tucker often claim Russia is Europe’s biggest economy. At market exchange rates, Germany, the UK and France are much larger, and Italy is around the same size.

Purchasing power parity (PPP) adjusts for local prices, and Russia ranks first in Europe by this measure. For its war effort, the relevance is mainly domestic: spending can buy more labour and locally produced military equipment.

This gives no equivalent advantage when buying foreign technology and says nothing about ordinary Russians’ prosperity.
