They adjust the clock in basketball games all the time. They would have checked before this play started and noticed a 2 second diff

The end was a travesty. After michigan got a first down around midfield with no timeouts, the referees held the ball until Michigan was lined up, and only 1 second elapsed from the clock. They then blew the call as the clock ran out on the next play, and inexplicably added 1 second back to the clock. The clock had clearly expired before the ball was touched, and the game should have ended. The refs were clearing the field for one last play before the review began. After Michigan was gifted with an extra play, the resulting touchdown was not reviewed and Michigan was immediately declared the winner. Western Michigan was robbed by inept refereeing.
