I woke up this morning filled with grief and rage.

Three more protesters were hanged this morning in Iran. Publicly, from cranes, to show the consequences of dissent.

A fourth young woman, Anahita Azarshab, was shot and killed for protesting the hangings.

If you haven’t breathed a word about them, don’t you dare speak up to protest the war on their killers.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist Manar Qassem confessed during interrogation to the crimes he and fellow Gazan terrorists carried out on October 7 for Allah.

He admitted throwing a Jewish girl onto a couch, stripping her, and raping her at gunpoint in front of her horrified mother.

After the rape, the two other terrorists who invaded Israel with him grabbed the girl and her mother and took them away.

Before fleeing to Gaza he described opening fire on Jews and throwing a grenade into a house to kill Jewish people as human sacrifices for Allah.

One of the most important (and overlooked) scenes in the Odyssey is the encounter with the Lotus-eaters.

After nine days at sea, Odysseus and his men finally reach dry land. They go ashore to collect water, and Odysseus sends three men to go explore.

When his men don't return, Odysseus begins to worry.

The men had met some of the islanders (the Lotus-eaters), "who did them no hurt, but gave them to eat of the lotus, which was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home, and did not even want to go back".

Odysseus ends up having to drag his men back to the ships and quickly sail away.

One must understand the symbolic power of the lotus. Its danger is not in any physical threat. The lotus is so deadly because it overloads you with pleasure, taking away all sense of urgency.

In this state of pleasure and relaxation, you forget your mission and your purpose. The men who ate the lotus flowers completely forgot about everything of value in their lives: their homes, their families, etc.

It's easy to think the monsters and beasts are the most terrifying threats you face. But because they're so obviously dangerous and remind you that death is a real possibility, they alert you to the value of life, and remind you of why you're fighting. But the real danger is a life so comfortable that you forget what you were trying to do in the first place.

Statistically speaking, it's unlikely you'll ever go to war or die of famine. But it is certainly possible that an addiction to your phone will derail you from your mission. Abundance of food and entertainment is far more likely to destroy you than most physical threats.

Yes, you will encounter plenty of Sirens and Cyclopes in life. But the real threat, which you must fend off every single day, is that of the lotus flower: a delicious indulgence that brings you immediate satisfaction, and makes you forget what you were fighting for.

How can we tell the difference between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism?

By this standard, hard left Edmonton councillor Michael Janz is flirting with antisemitism by calling for the Israeli pavilion alone to be banned from the city's Heritage Festival.

He didn't call for the Chinese pavilion to be banned, despite the PRC's ongoing genocide (recognized as such by Canada's Parliament) of Uyghur Muslims, the cultural wreckage of Tibet, and one of the world's worst human rights records.

He didn't call for the Afghanistan pavilion to be banned, despite the Taliban's inhuman mistreatment of women and girls, including the prohibition on female education.

He didn't call for the Cuba Pavilion to be banned, despite Cuba's decades of brutal repression, thousands of political prisioners, and the worst human rights record in the Western hemisphere.

He didn't call for the banning of pavilions representing countries who punish homosexuality with imprisonment or death (Somalia, Uganda, et al)

He didn't call for the banning of the Sudan pavilion, despite that country's appalling human rights record, including a 25 year campaign of violence against non Arab minority populations.

He didn't call for the banning of the Iran pavilion, despite that country being the biggest global sponsor of terrorism and of mass murderers like Assad; and being responsible for killing dozens of Edmontonians on board UIA flight 252 in 2020, etc.

Am I suggesting that Canadians from these and other repressive countries should be held accountable for the actions of governments in their countries of origin?

Of course not. Many of the volunteers staging these pavilions are refugees and political foes of those regimes.

So why are leftists like Janz so quick to ascribe their cartoonish vilification of the state of Israel to Edmontonians of Israeli origin?

Why would a leftist like Janz never think to ostracize those other countries or their diaspora communities in Canada, but obsessively single out Israel for opprobrium?

I think the answer is found in the Third Worldism that has taken hold in much of the contemporary left, a view that holds developing countries to radically lower moral and legal standards, often excusing their deficiencies as the consequence of western imperialism and capitalism; and an actual sympathy with Communist regimes like Cuba and the PRC. After all, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, amirite?

The toxic Third Worldism of the contemporary left also reflects a unique hatred for the only Jewish state in the world, a country that represents the dream of an ancient indigenous people to recreate their historical homeland as a refuge following centuries of persecution and displacement, culminating in the Holocaust.

Much of this hostility is based on the caricature of Jews as avatars of capitalism; or because many Jews are white-presenting, and are therefore privileged oppressors in the bizarro world of intersectionality / critical race theory.

Regardless of the reasons, Janz has given us an object lesson in how hatred of Israel is a uniquely powerful pathology in much of the contemporary left.

A convicted sex offender was exempted from Canada’s national sex offender registry because the judge was concerned about the offender facing deportation.

Let that sink in.

The registry exists to protect Canadians, not shield convicted offenders from immigration consequences. Public safety must always come before the interests of criminals.

Enough leniency. Canada needs strong laws that put public safety first, ensure convicted sex offenders face the full consequences of their crimes, and remove serious foreign criminals from this country after they’ve served their sentences.

The 5 pillars of democracy are crumbling, and we're seeing it in real time.

Democracy doesn't rest on one foundation. No, it stands on five interdependent pillars:

1. The Vote - powered by an educated, informed electorate. Without citizens who can think critically and separate signal from noise, elections become popularity contests.

2. The Government - tasked with executing the will of the people and delivering results. Elected by the many, a threat to minorities.

3. The Opposition - essential for scrutiny, alternatives, and preventing power from corrupting. Holding the Government accountable.

4. The Media - the watchdog that holds power to account. It must be a free press, informing the public with truths and facts. Educating the voter.

5. The Expert Community — academics, analysts, and specialists (like engineers & lawyers) who provide evidence-based guidance, not ideological cheerleading. They question the media and the government.

All five are under strain today, but the media is collapsing fastest. Instead of relentlessly questioning those in government, too many outlets now treat the opposition as the primary threat. Accountability has flipped. They're scrutinizing the challengers, and shielding those in power. When the referee starts playing for one team, the whole game loses legitimacy.

A healthy democracy requires all five pillars strong and independent. When they weaken, especially when the watchdogs become lapdogs, we don't just get bad governance. We get something far more fragile.

Time to reinforce the foundations.
