Shawon Dunston received 66% of over 19,700 votes and is now officially inducted into the Hall of Pretty Good. Dunston, who was born in March of 1963 in New York, first gained widespread recognition for his baseball play in high school, where he batted .790 as a senior with 37 steals while not being caught a single time (holy crap). Thanks largely to this success, Dunston was a widely regarded top prospect and was taken with the first overall pick in 1982. Dunston, who was representing himself instead of using an agent, signed with the Cubs for $100,000 and his HoPG journey was officially underway. Dunston would make his MLB debut for the Cubs on April 9, 1985. This would kickstart a Cubs tenure that would see him play 12 seasons with the Cubs, making two All Star teams while totaling 1,219 hits in Chicago. After the Cubs, Dunston would become a bit of an Immaculate Grid legend, spending time with the Giants, Cardinals, Indians, Mets, and Pirates. Dunston was widely known for being a good teammate who had excellent leadership skills, and his strong arm at shortstop helped endear him to baseball fans all over, especially those in Chicago. Dunston also has a son named Shawon Dunston Jr., who is a registered HoPG voter and can often be seen voting and commenting on the page. Dunston Jr. was even drafted by the Cubs as well in 2011, going in the 11th round. Dunston Jr. has played in 46 games for the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League in 2026, where he’s put up an OPS of .967, proving his father’s pretty good genes were passed on to him. Dunston received just 0.2% of the HOF vote in 2008, but who cares? He’s now permanently enshrined in the Hall of Pretty Good, the place that will truly appreciate him.
