The issue was never solely about religion. It was also about traditions and social expectations that gradually took away our freedom. We were wrapped in black, not merely as a form of clothing, but as though we were being buried beneath expectations we had never chosen. We became victims of a society that often claimed to protect religion while, in reality, caring deeply about how men and their families were perceived by others
A man who allowed the women in his family greater freedom could easily be judged by society and labeled with degrading accusations. The word itself was often stretched beyond its original meaning until it became a weapon used to control families and silence anyone who questioned the accepted norms. What should have been a matter of personal conviction became a matter of reputation, shame, and fear of people’s opinions
Perhaps the most painful part is that these expectations were sometimes presented as though they were inseparable from faith. Tradition became difficult to distinguish from religion, and social pressure began speaking in the language of morality. A family’s choices were no longer judged by their sincerity, but by how they appeared to those watching from the outside
And what can we expect when people take every concept and reshape it to serve their own interests? When fear of society becomes stronger than personal conscience, freedom becomes something that must be justified, and individuality becomes something to be punished
Clothing can cover a body, but it should never become a shroud for a person’s voice. Faith, when chosen sincerely, comes from conviction rather than fear. The difference between choice and coercion may seem small from the outside, yet for the person living under it, that difference can mean everything
Perhaps the real question is not whether tradition should exist, but whether tradition should have the power to decide the course of another person’s life. A society can preserve its values without turning them into chains. It can respect faith without making fear the measure of righteousness. And it can protect its traditions without forgetting that behind every expectation stands a human being who deserves to be heard
