More than 15 years later, we're still relying largely on estimates for a population of 1.4+ billion people.

So how reliable are our poverty rates, unemployment figures, GDP per capita, welfare coverage,

If the population hasn't been officially counted, the denominator behind many national statistics is uncertain.
You cannot manage what you do not measure.

And you cannot measure a nation accurately if you haven't counted it.

If the profits are privatized while the pollution, health impacts, and ecological destruction are socialized, then growth becomes a burden carried by the many for the benefit of the few.

A country should not measure success only by the amount of foreign investment it attracts. The real measure is whether that investment creates dignified jobs, transfers technology, protects the environment, and improves the lives of ordinary citizens.

Those suffering the consequences - villagers, tribals, young & ordinary citizens - are spending their own time, money, & energy trying to repair the damage.
