As we approach the 33rd anniversary of the February 26, 1993 World Trade Center bombing, we remember the events of that day and recall the stories of those who were there.
A memorial fountain was erected on the World Trade Center’s Austin J. Tobin Plaza in 1995, directly above the site of the explosion. It was designed by New York City–based artist Elyn Zimmerman (American, b. 1945). Arrayed around the fountain were the names of the six victims: John DiGiovanni, Robert Kirkpatrick, Stephen A. Knapp, William Macko, Wilfredo Mercado, and Monica Rodriguez Smith and her unborn child.
The 1993 memorial was destroyed on 9/11/01. This fragment, bearing part of the name of bombing victim John DiGiovanni, was the only piece recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. For many personally affected by the events of February 26, the relic has become the focus of annual commemorations. #911Museum

Ahead of the country's 250th birthday, our upcoming installation "Our Flag Was Still There" invites visitors to consider the power and meaning of the American flag in moments of crisis and recovery. Opening March 18, this new installation presents the flag as a witness to history through actual flags, photographs, and artifacts, and traces its evolution into a symbol of resilience and hope for us all in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Access is included with your #911Museum ticket. @America250
