It's Juneteenth. It was on this day in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with 2000 troops and a message: The enslaved were free. Slaveowners in the state had been hiding this information.
