In this building, the SS created the morgue and the first crematorium at Auschwitz. In the fall of 1941, the morgue was turned into the first gas chamber to murder people. It operated until December 1942.

The chimney was connected to the furnaces by underground heat-resistant channels beneath the floor.

In 1944, the building was turned into an air-raid shelter for the SS. After the liberation, Survivors reconstructed two of the three furnaces, and the chimney. Some walls in the shelter were removed (to reveal the gas chamber space), and several holes in the gas chamber roof were reopened.
