I watch alot of Zambians interacting with each other here, some even cracking inside jokes. Are you guys like friends in real life or maybe you’re just laughing with strangers that understand your humor ?
‘The Last Supper’ by Ignatius Sampa.
The artist was only 23 years old when he took the Lusaka art scene by storm with his caricatures of the Makishi.
In the same year, 2014, on a fateful November morning, he was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident on GER.
Rumours started swirling in the art community surrounding the mystery of his death, claiming that the Makishi had killed him. Also known as the Akishi in Angola and the DRC, they are believed to be spirits of the deceased.
“The Makishi were tired of Sampa’s shenanigans. They were tired of disrespectfully being portrayed in renditions of Da Vinci’s Last Supper and Mona Lisa, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, doing the Salsa or playing the violin and so by otherworldly means claimed the artist’s life by physically manifesting the death in a fatal accident.” — Andrew Mulenga, The Bulletin & Record, 2015.
