Mount Isa man Christopher John Anderson has avoided jail time after being sentenced for shooting and killing 41 horses - including three pregnant mares and their unborn fetuses, near Longreach in 2021.

Neighbours who found the deceased horses at the 5,000-acre Yanburra Station property raised the alarm, with the herd's elderly owner in palliative care at the time.

The 50-year-old was given a wholly suspended three-and-a-half year sentence and was ordered to pay just $9,500 in compensation.
