I’m grateful @_chloeswarbrick is speaking up for Palestine, but when she attacks the media for being silent on war crimes it’s utter hypocrisy …

I feel deep frustration and grief as I recall all the efforts I made to warn her about the Assange case. I provided her clear evidence from the most credible experts in the world that it was an unprecedented attack on Global Press Freedom.

He literally stopped an illegal invasion with truthful journalism then was “tortured” (* @NilsMelzer then UN Special Rapporteur). All the experts agree his case criminalised journalism revealing war crimes. 👀

She chose to say nothing.

So with Chloe it seems journalists are damned if they don’t speak up… and even more damned if they do. Because she’ll let them rot in jail without saying a word?

I suggest if she’s serious about journalists being able to report the truth she should rectify this abominable mistake and do all she can to advocate to close the prosecutorial pathway of the case.

My favourite story about #Assange is the way he fought the prison to gradually flood his cell with books.

When UN Special Rapporteur @NilsMelzer visited him in 2019 Julian was not allowed any books.

Melzer pushed for the prison to allow him access. Originally they only allowed a dozen at a time. But gradually Julian managed to increase it. Eventually he even convinced the prison to let him remove all the furniture including his bed, which he replaced with a yoga mat, so he could fill his cell. He told @CharlesMGlass of La Monde in 2024 he then had 232 books.

The same principled leaders who spoke up for Assange are the same now standing up for Palestine. ✊

It was amazing to be in the same court that heard the pivotal Assange case, sitting in the same glass dock which as he complained was near impossible to hear from, while his lawyer Gareth Peirce took on the London Met Police over their “historic” over-reach, blocking a peaceful protest.

@JohnWRees, author of multiple books on the history of Protest in the UK says this case represents a “historic” overreach by Police, not seen since the attempted suppression of the suffragettes movement.

This case cuts to “the heart of what it means to live in a free and democratic society” to borrow a phrase from @Stella_Assange speaking about her husband’s case.

Julian’s case asked the question “are we allowed to know the truth, through journalism, about war crimes / crimes of Empire?”
This case asks “are we allowed to peacefully demonstrate about media lies war crimes / crimes of Empire?”
